Summary: No, he had no choices. He’d lost his first ever game of chess, and as his last pieces toppled to the ground around him, he wished that he, for once, was as good as anyone else. He wished that he was important and loved.

He smiled but the smile didn’t reach his eyes.

“Tom,” he whispered. “Finish this.”
