She has been quiet and thoughtful all day, my Hermione, and I well know the reason.
It is because of the wedding that we will attend next week. Her fellow Gryffindor, the one who killed Voldemort's snake -- Neville Longbottom, he is called -- he is to be married to another of her friends, Hannah Abbott.
I am happy for them. It is a good match; they are well suited, just like my Hermione and me. Hermione agrees. It is not a problem with the couple themselves that has made her so pensive today. It is the guest list, I am sure.
"A knut for your thoughts, Hermy-own-ninny," I say. I use the old nickname as a way to lighten her mood. "You have been off in a vorld of your own today."
She looks up, and as I had hoped, she smiles. It still gives me flutters in my stomach, her smile.
"I'm sorry, Viktor; I wasn't trying to neglect you."
I sit down beside her on the divan. I love the way she -- what is that English phrase? -- ah, yes, budges. I love the way she budges over to make room for me, tucking her feet beneath her and taking my hand.
"I am not vorried about neglect, my love," I tell her. "I am vorried only that you are not happy."
It is not that I expect her always to be happy, of course. She and I have both been through a war, and I am Bulgarian, so I am well acquainted with dark moods. They are normal, for without the dark, we could not appreciate the light.
But even though I know this, I still do not like it when I see clouds of sorrow cross Hermione's dear face.
She sighs. "I'm not unhappy, I just -- oh, it's foolish, Viktor. I should be looking forward to Neville's wedding, and of course I'm just thrilled for him and Hannah, but I'm afraid that the reception will be. . . well, it could be very awkward."
Ah, yes. I knew that was the trouble.
"You are thinking, perhaps, that I vill start a scene with Mr Ronald Veasley? That I vill treat him like a Bludger and knock him away if he tries to talk to you? Ve Bulgarians -- ve are so very surly and jealous, you know."
She slaps my arm playfully and gives a small laugh. "Oh, don't be silly. I know you'll do no such thing, and Ron will behave himself, too. But things will be strained. I'll always love the Weasley family, but I know some of them are still upset that I left Ron. Molly will be polite, but she'll have hurt and incredulity written all over her face, and she won't be able to resist making pointed comments about how happy Ron is with Girlfriend Number 58 or 75 or whatever, and what a pity it is that I married someone who has to travel so much. Arthur will over-compensate and be too jovial. Percy will be pompous, and -- "
"Percy vas pompous even vhen you vere still dating Ronald," I point out. "And Molly vill be right -- it is a pity that I have to travel so much and spend so many nights on the road vithout you. I am vun lonely Bulgarian, believe me."
Hermione giggles and snuggles against me. "Well, my poor, sad Bulgarian," she says, "you're not alone tonight, are you? I'll make sure you don't have another lonely moment while you're home."
She gives me a kiss full of promise, and I hug her to me.
"Do not fret about the vedding," I whisper. "There vill be many people there who love you, and we vill have fun."
Then I add, "And I vill look forward to flirting with my fans. I hear that your old friend Lavender is qvite the Quidditch lover. . ."
Hermione fixes me with a pretend stern glare that would make her beloved Professor McGonagall proud. "You just try it," she says. "And I'll have to knock both you and Lavender away like Bludgers."
"You English," I say, kissing her neck. "You are so surly and jealous."
Her laugh and her smile are all the light I need.
We rise together off the divan and head to our bed.
