Regulus lay in bed and watched Rabastan sleep. Merlin, he was the most gorgeous man he’d ever laid eyes on. They’d spent the whole day in bed, making love. He didn’t want to leave but he had to.
After dark, he kissed a still sleeping Rabastan and slipped out of their warm bed. With a pain in his heart, he left a note on the night stand and hoped his lover would understand. One last look and he turned walked away.
Regulus stood on the high out crop of rock, watching the water foam and crash against the jagged rocks. The sea looked harsh, the danger was palpable. But Regulus knew he had to do this. It was the right thing to do, the Dark Lord needed to be stopped.
Carefully walking along the rough rocks, Regulus made his descent down the cliff’s face. Waves hit the rocks, the spray hitting his face. The sea salt stung his eyes, but he couldn’t stop now. This was too important.
He found the fissure and the tunnel it concealed. Taking a deep breath he summoned his courage and swam forward. The walls were slimy and seemed to have a life of their own. Regulus cut his arms and legs as they brushed against the submerged rocks.
Reaching a dead end, Regulus reached into his pocket and pulled out an ornate dagger. Without hesitation Regulus cut his hand and spread his blood on the wall. Instantly a blazing silver outline appeared. An archway appeared in the rocks.
He walked forward, holding out his wand, Lumos barely lighting the way. A vast lake lay before him, the opposite banks hidden from view, its waters deadly still and emanating death. A misty greenish light lit the middle of the lake. It was an eerie place. The cavern’s ceiling wasn’t even visible. Careful not to break the water’s surface, Regulus walked onward, his footfalls echoing throughout the vast cave.
Reaching another dead end, Regulus grabbed what looked like thin air and tapped his hand with his wand. A tarnished copper chain formed. Striking the chain, a tiny row boat broke the surface without a single ripple forming. Taking a deep breath he stepped into the boat.
Glancing at the water, he saw the dreaded Inferi floating just beneath the surface. Waiting…
Closing his eyes Regulus envisioned the war over and Voldemort dead. And Rabastan right there in his arms.
The boat hit land. Regulus exited and stood on a small island composed of smooth rock. A stone basin on a pedestal was situated in the middle. It was filled with an emerald liquid, emitting a green glow.
Regulus knew the key. The Horcrux, in the form of a locket, was hidden in the bottom of the basin. He had to drink his way to it. It was the only way. The liquid would cause extreme pain. If one managed to drink it all and get the Horcrux, they needed water to counter its effects. And that summoned the bloody Inferi.
It would mean his death.
If it stopped The Dark Lord… It was a small price to pay.
He only hoped Rabastan could forgive him.
