Title: Moonflowers and Dragons
Pairing: Charlie/Luna
Request: The woman on the other side of the bar had a different allure.
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 484
Summary: Charlie was used to the sorts of girls who typically flirted with him, but Luna Lovegood was something else entirely.
Author's Notes: I hope this suits your tastes!

The woman on the other side of the bar had a different kind of allure.

Charlie was used to the sorts of girls who typically flirted with him. Shimmering hair, short skirts, bedroom eyes, and a smile that could knock the socks off any hot-blooded young male. They had loud laughs and silky whispers; in a word, they were sexy.

The blonde who served him his drink, on the other hand, was something else entirely. Her hair, though pulled up off her neck, was a mass of tangled blonde waves, sloppily done up and hastily decorated with little red flowers. She wore tastefully tailored robes with patches of different colours here and there, sewn in seemingly at random. Her eyes didn't try to tempt him, didn't size him up – she smiled like she knew him, like he was an old friend.

"I added a dash of moonflower to your drink, just so you know," she said, completely matter-of-fact, with no hint of seduction, no ulterior motive. "It's supposed to highly enhance one's communication with magical creatures. I always have some just before I go fishing, and I always catch more plimpies than my father."

Charlie immediately adored the sound of her voice; its slight musical cadance rang with authenticity. This girl did not put on airs in the hopes of catching a quick fuck with a fit dragon keeper; this girl was solidly, unabashedly herself. And he liked that very much indeed.

He was used to the sorts of girls who typically flirted with him, manufactured beauties who were fantastic in bed but bland and useless outside of it. They couldn't converse; they had nothing to say. They touched Charlie's chest and fluttered their eyelashes. That was all right once in a while; it was certainly nice to be admired, doing wonders for the male ego.

But the woman on the other side of the bar had a different kind of allure. She knew what Charlie did for a living and did not gush about how "adorable" dragons were, looked at his body and did not lick her lips, served him a drink and offered a quirky bit of wisdom to go along with it, instead of some overused pick up line.

"Tell me more about moonflowers," Charlie said, leaning one elbow on the bar, as the multitude of sexy women in the room faded out around him. He would lose himself in the dreamy gaze of Luna Lovegood instead, and talk about moonflowers and dragons, learning and communicating as two kindred spirits with a passion for magical creatures and creativity.

And if they did go to bed with one another, it would be much later, after they had drained their minds of discussion, after they had smiled like old friends and walked off into a sunset together, not thinking about one night stands at all, but of what the future might bring.

This was very lovely. I like how they will have a real relationship rather than a shallow one :)

Absolutely beautiful! :) I'm always very twitchy about how Luna is written, but she's absolutely perfect in this. I love how you've got Charlie comparing her to every other girl without it coming across like she's just flat out weird.

[livejournal.com profile] bluemermaid, I thank you so much for this, and my deepest apologies for not commenting earlier! This suits me to no end, from how you show Luna (through Charlie's eyes) to be more well-rounded and grounded than people perceive her, and Charlie to be more than just the bloke with the tattoos who works with dragons. And I appreciate how natural it feels; sure, sometimes people find love in the oddest places or situations that throw them together with someone, but many of us find love in the quiet conversations about mutual interests, which grow into spending more and more time together. The line "Tell me more about moonflowers," Charlie said... just made me happy. It's very much a conversation I can see them having.

Thank you again, very much!
