Title: Sweets Before Supper
Pairing: Hermione Granger/Viktor Krum
Rating: PG
Word Count: 969
Summary: As Hermione and Viktor prepare to celebrate their first Christmas in Bulgaria, they find that an old house doesn’t take much to fill with cheer.
Author's Notes: I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and that your new year is filled with friends and fun!
What is Christmas? It is tenderness for the past, courage for the present, hope for the future. It is a fervent wish that every cup overflow with blessings rich and eternal, and that every path may lead to peace.

The house was glorious – older than recorded wizarding history could recall – but glorious all the same. To the Muggle eye, it appeared to be a derelict remnant of a long-standing family feud. The locked wooden gate was forbidding enough to keep curious locals out, and the shuttered windows inspired tales of haunting and ghosts. Some locals even said that the house was haunted by a young man who had hanged himself when his great love, a beautiful woman from a wealthy merchant family, had deserted him for another man.
The truth was far simpler. There was a young man, but his heart was not broken. He was very much alive and lived within the walls of the ancient house. There was also a young woman, who was beautiful (although her hair seemed to be in a perpetual state of chaos). She lived by the man’s side, as his wife, since they had married not long after a great war.
Viktor did nothing to discourage the stories the locals told. Life as a wizard in a mostly Muggle village was much easier as a result. Hermione had been enthralled with the Krum family manor the moment she set foot across the threshold. She was still toying with the idea of writing a book about the house, and the remarkable lives of those that had lived in it before. But not tonight, she reminded herself sternly.
It was Christmas. The very first she and Viktor would have as a married couple in his family home. Viktor had been quiet – almost sullen and surly in the past few weeks. Hermione couldn’t quite sort out if it was because he was on hiatus from Quidditch as a result of a leg injury or because it was the first year without so many of their friends.
“Here goes nothing,” Hermione mumbled to herself as she flicked her wand and set a steaming pot of hot chocolate on a tray. A plate of honey spice cookies and jam filled biscuits was already waiting to be devoured.
Hermione carried the tray into the Great Hall – it was smaller than the one at Hogwarts but she couldn’t think of it by any other name. An enormous fir tree stretched almost to the ceiling. It sparkled with tiny fairy lights and brightly colored baubles. Viktor stood in front of the fire, jabbing the logs with a poker. Hermione set the tray on a table and stood next to him, placing a hand on Viktor’s shoulder.
“There’s some hot chocolate and biscuits. Why don’t we have a bite before it’s time to start dinner?” Hermione tugged at Viktor’s sleeve.
He raised an eyebrow. “Vot? Hermy-own-ninny, you vould eat sweets before supper?”
Hermione poured Viktor a cup of hot chocolate, daintily picked up a spice cookie and shoved the entire thing in her mouth. She nearly choked on the crumbs as she chewed, and Viktor couldn’t help but laugh.
The room lightened instantly as they talked about the cookies and Hermione’s recent misadventures in the kitchen.
“Thank you, Hermy-own-ninny,” Viktor said quietly as he set his cup on the table.
“For what?” she asked.
Viktor gestured at the room around them. “The manor has not seen such beauty and spirit since long before I vas born.”
“You’re welcome, Viktor, but it was all Luna’s idea. She said the proper way to bring life back into a dormant house was to fill it to the rafters.” Hermione made a note to send Luna a proper thank you by owl post.
“Ah, Luna. She vas the blond Ravenclaw, yes? She vore vegetables in her ears at Hogwarts?”
Hermione pursed her lips and tried to remember what on earth Viktor was referring to. “The radish earrings. Oh, I had forgotten those.” She nearly doubled over in laughter. “You should have heard Luna as we put up the garlands on the staircases. They kept unwinding themselves until Luna shouted at them to stop being so fickle and behave.”
Before Viktor could respond, an envelope shot out of the fireplace and landed at his feet. He picked it up cautiously and held the envelope out to Hermione. “Vere you expecting anything?”
She shook her head. “No, I had a parcel from Ginny that came by owl post, but that was a few days ago. It’s addressed to you, Viktor.” Hermione handed the envelope back and waited for him to open it.
Dear Viktor and Hermione,
Now that the Christmas decorations are up, the first snows are falling. We won’t see much of that here in England, so we’re coming to you.
Luna
Moments later, the fire blazed bright green as Luna, followed by Rolf Scamander, appeared in the room. Luna was breathless, and brushed Floo powder from her sleeves.
“I hope you don’t mind, Hermione, but I thought this house could use some cheer. The others will be along shortly.” She handed her cloak to Rolf, who set them on a chair nearby.
“Others?” Viktor asked.
Luna smiled serenely. “You’ll see. Once I chatted with Ginny, it seemed there was no stopping anyone.”
One by one, they began to step out of the fireplace. Harry, Ginny, Ron, Seamus Finnegan, Hannah Abbott…eventually Hermione gave up counting. The carpet was going to be covered in Floo powder and ashes, Hermione thought with a grimace as she tried not to look.
After taking one look at Viktor, however, it seemed that a little mess was going to be worth it. He was smiling, talking animatedly with Ron about contract negotiations for the Grodzisk Goblins.
As the party stretched into the night, Viktor met Hermione’s eyes across the room. He nodded and touched his fingers to his lips. She placed a hand over her heart and grinned. Christmas in Bulgaria was going to be a fine adventure after all.
