"Look, Harry, it just isn't working," Ginny says, slamming her hand down onto the kitchen counter. "Can't you see how much we've changed?"
Harry stares at her and Ginny sees the revelation in his eyes, the realization of what they have become. "Ginny," he says, and his voice is pitiful. "I never meant – ".
"Don't worry about what you meant." Ginny sighs and looks away from him, tracing patterns on the counter top. "When I was a girl, I worshiped you, Harry. You were everything that was good and right in the world." She lifts her head, meets his gaze again; she finishes her thought wordlessly, knowing he will hear her all the same. She isn't a girl anymore.
And Harry isn't the Boy Who Lived, either. He nods at Ginny and seems to fade away right before her eyes, the light leaving him as he settles into his dark and gloomy new life. He is a star Auror and he is overwhelmed with cases, chasing darkness across the country and not having time for anything else. The days of carefree laughing by the Hogwarts lake are far away and gone now, memories having crumbled into ruin.
Ginny touches his shoulder before she leaves, apologizing silently as she closes the door behind her. She misses what Harry used to be, but she cannot remain trapped in the ruins when there is something newer awaiting her in the sun.
Astoria grins when she sees Ginny, taking her by the hand and placing a tender kiss upon her lips, and Ginny feels her guilt dissipate into the sky.
