"Why won't you come out with me?" Ginny demands. Heat radiates from her pores; it clogs the air between them. "You've gone places with me before. It's just an art museum. I thought you'd like it."
"I have too many obligations and things to do," says Astoria, not quite meeting Ginny's intense stare. "I can't be seen frolicking about."
"We're friends," Ginny asserts. "What's wrong with having a friend?" Her face hardens slowly. "Or am I the wrong sort of friend."
"It isn't what you think," Astoria insists. She is frightened, her eyes darting from side to side, seeking an escape route, her body tensed in a flight-or-fight dilemma. "It isn't about our friendship." She pauses, swallows. "Well, it is, but it's not about our blood status, or our money, or anything so superficial as that."
"Then what?" Sweating, panting, her hair plastered across her forehead, Ginny leans back against the wall. She feels tired and sick. "What is it?" She knows, she wants to think she knows, it pulls at her. But she needs to hear Astoria say it.
"It is that I wish to kiss you," Astoria says, her voice steeped in defeat. They pause, eyes closed, listening to the words ricochet between them. "I wish to kiss you."
"Then kiss me," Ginny says quietly.
"It wouldn't be right."
"Fuck what's right. Kiss me, Astoria." Ginny lifts her head and their eyes meet, Ginny's gaze hard and demanding. "Kiss me."
Astoria leans over and presses her lips very gently against Ginny's. They still, mouths connected, neither one of them breathing, and then Astoria pulls away. The tension fades from the room like air leaking from an old balloon, and finally, they smile at one another.
They kiss again.
