Ginny leans in and kisses Harry's cheek before she leaves for work. He smiles blandly at her, as his eyes are looking elsewhere, reading reports from his office. Ginny tucks her hair behind her ears and stares at him as she steps into the Floo. He's so familiar and yet so different. Sometimes she thinks she would forget his name if it weren't in the papers all the time.
She goes to work and writes her column, poring over Quidditch photographs and tossing papers about in a mad rush to find that latest interview she's supposed to comment on. Astoria picks the parchment up off the floor where Ginny has accidentally dropped it, and they grin at one another. They eat lunch together. Astoria relates an anecdote about a stubborn woman at the tailor's, who simply refused to accept that she had gone up a size. Ginny laughs uproariously as Astoria's retelling, as she does voices surprisingly well. They discuss each other's column in the afternoon, Ginny smiling again as Astoria leans in to mark a spelling error on her parchment. Ginny is rubbish at spelling.
They touch one another before they leave for the evening. Astoria affectionately flips Ginny's hair over her shoulder, and Ginny squeezes Astoria's arm. They depart in adjoining Floo outlets, with the promise that they will see each other first thing tomorrow. Ginny is still grinning as she shouts out her home address.
She prepares dinner and sets it out on the table just as Harry arrives home. He's had a hard day at work, and he doesn't feel like talking. They eat in silence, and climb into bed together in the darkness. Their bodies do not make contact as they settle in to get some sleep. Ginny stares up at the ceiling, her face blank. She can barely even feel him beside her. It doesn't bother her.
Ginny kisses Harry and feels nothing but the emptiness between them, a tepid puddle where their passion used to be. Ginny goes to sleep and dreams of kissing Astoria, and it burns like fire on her skin.
