Astoria has spilled her coffee. "Oh, you miserable creature," she says like a curse, leaping out of her seat. She has managed to avoid ruining her robes, but the papers stacked neatly on her desk are being quickly steeped in liquid. "Shit, shit, shit."
"Never expected to hear that sort of language out of your mouth," Ginny says wryly. Astoria looks up to see her standing in the doorway, with a smug sort of pleasure on her face. "You being of the higher class and all."
Astoria is in no mood for that sort of prejudice at the moment. "Would you please stop stereotyping me and give me a hand, please?"
Ginny pauses, perhaps taken aback by the short angry burst of Astoria's words, but then she springs into action, darting over and lifting papers before the coffee puddle can seep further into them. "Do you think a drying charm would fix this?"
"Do I think a drying charm would fix this? Are you joking?" Astoria pulls her wand out of her robe and casts the spell over her desk. The coffee evaporates immediately, leaving a dark stain in the wood and shriveling the papers up. "A simple drying charm is not enough to remove the stink of coffee."
"Perhaps a simple cup of tea next time, then," Ginny says.
"You think you're so clever." Astoria is frustrated; she puts her hands on her head and stares down at her desk with considerable dismay. "This will never come out, you know."
Ginny laughs. "Switch desks with me, then, if it bothers you so much."
Astoria looks up at her. "Switch?"
"Yes, switch." Ginny rolls her eyes. "Has the very sight of stained wood really rendered you insensible? Didn't your family teach you words?"
Astoria should be furious about these words, but there is something about the way Ginny says them. Ginny cocks her head to the side and smiles, and her smile just might be the most amazing sight Astoria has ever seen. There is friendship in her smile. Astoria smiles back. "Apparently not, as your offer seems to have stripped them from my tongue."
"There's your problem, then. Who keeps words on their tongue? I prefer to store mine in the brain."
"Ah, the brain, the bit we higher class Slytherins take no notice of, or so the Gryffindors say."
Ginny laughs. "Now who's stereotyping?"
Astoria grins at her. "Tit for tat, my dear."
Ginny laughs again and clears the desk, cradling parchment in her arms as she carries them over to her own desk. She even helps Astoria copy over what's been written on the coffee-stained pieces. "After all, I was stereotyping you earlier. And it's not like I have anything more interesting than helping you to do with my time." She shoves her own half-written article aside. "They can wait on that one, it's rubbish, anyway."
"Thank you," says Astoria, who is truly surprised that Ginny would actually assist someone so thoroughly when she wasn't even involved in ruining the original papers.
"I know what it's like to be stereotyped," Ginny just says simply, writing away without looking up.
Of course there would have to be something about Ginny Potter, for her to have attracted the Boy Who Lived amongst his many admirers. Astoria has not put much stock before into anything said about the Potters. Nobody could possibly be that perfect.
Though it seems Ginny might be closer than was previously expected.

Date: 2012-03-11 01:03 pm (UTC)I really liked this. A coffee drama, yay! Astoria is a cute little drama queen. :D Poor students of Hogwarts, forever trapped in the inherited stereotypes of their houses, but they surealy are able to overcome those borders. And I like how you describe Ginny through Astoria's eyes, and even the glimpse we get of the Boy Who Lived. She should hear the story of how Ginny drew Harry's attention to her, that might be funny. xD
Is it normal for me that I'm scared Astoria already knows Draco? *cradles Draco's heart* You never mentioned if she's Greengrass or Malfoy... I'm so weird. :D

Date: 2012-03-12 01:45 am (UTC)Thank you! I am glad you liked Astoria, I was worried she might come off too snobby or dramatic.
I did leave out her last name on purpose, haha. You'll have to wait to find out! ;)
