Astoria starts out pretty and dignified and serious, her steps slow and measured as she walks primly down the corridors. She sits up straight in her little corner and writes her daily column in perfectly organized lines, her hand moving in slow, carefully plotted increments across the page. Astoria starts with pinned-up hair and natural makeup and brand new robes in the most fashionable cut.
Then Ginny gets closer, and Astoria smiles up at her, and the two of them somehow end up alone in the office after everyone else has gone home for the night. Ginny pulls out a bottle of firewhiskey and Astoria purses her glossy lips and thinks about it. Astoria is prim and proper and careful; Astoria wants to say no. But they are alone together late at night, and darkness can do funny things to a person.
They drink half the bottle, and eventually Astoria's hair falls out of its bun, as she and Ginny laugh over the worst jokes, and they sit together on Astoria's little desk with their thighs touching. Then Astoria is nervous and giggly and sweating, and her robes are wrinkled. Ginny bumps her shoulder and Astoria's writings scatter off the desk. Astoria is silly and messy and quick, and she is no longer pretty; she's beautiful.
Ginny kisses her and Astoria's makeup smudges. They topple backwards, crinkling parchment, and Astoria can't remember what it means to be dignified anymore. It doesn't matter.
