Without warning, the evening breeze turned to heavy wind and the few scattered droplets of rain became thick as a waterfall. Getting drenched on horseback, Tom wondered briefly if he should go back to Great Hangleton and sleep the storm over at the inn. But he was probably just about half way between the two towns and the inn was seedy at best. He would be wet and miserable anyway, but if he trod through, he would be able to have a hot bath and sleep in his own bed.
The wind howled as he rode through the nastiest part of his trip, nearing the hovel where the town misfit lived with his two children. Tom shivered as the hut came into view, disliking immensely the idea of passing by it on such a horrible night. He wasn't a superstitious man, but the place was scary in broad daylight, let alone now. There was a rumor that the inhabitants of the house dabbled in some sort of sorcery and, while Tom didn't believe such things existed, he spurred his horse to make distance between him and the hovel as quickly as possible. At least in this storm he wouldn't see the strange-looking woman who followed him with longing eyes whenever he went by the hut.
Suddenly Tom saw a woman standing on the side of the road. He cringed, thinking it was the ugly girl, but he felt compelled to slow down and noticed that she was, in fact, the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen. Ignoring the creepy feeling in his spine, Tom gallantly stopped and offered her a ride. He apologized for being wet, but, when she sat astride the horse, her body against his, he felt a warmth enveloping him, and he was filled with a burning desire for her.
They rode into Little Hangleton, leaving the furious weather behind them, Tom's mind so addled by lust and love that he never remembered to ask her what she was doing outside on such a dark and stormy night.
And, especially, how she had managed to keep dry in the gale.
