"But it's tradition!" Helga insisted, stumbling slightly down the corridor in an attempt to catch up with Rowena. "Please, Wena?"
"No," she replied calmly, brushing a stray lock of hair from her face. "I don't care about tradition. We are not hanging up bits of plants in the doorways of the castle."
"But-"
"No buts."
"Too late!" Helga blurted out, barely catching herself from tripping down the stairway. "I've already hung them up." Rowena turned to her, hands on her hips, looking for the life of her like a very stern mother.
"You didn't."
"I did," she said haughtily, the affect slightly ruined by the pile of books she was carrying nearly toppling to the ground. "It's lovely, Wena. It's misteltoe."
"Mhm," Rowena murmured, clearly not impressed.
"Mistletoe is in no way dangerous," Helga told her boldly, and instantly realized her mistake. Rowena straightened her stance and took on the aura she had when in the classroom with the students.
"Not dangerous?" she repeated incredulously. "Not dangerous? This is not the mistletoe you had growing up, Helga- this is wizarding mistletoe. Don't you know what it does?"
"Er... well, no," Helga admitted.
"It traps the two together," Rowena said patiently. "Under the mistletoe, until they should kiss."
"Well, none of the students are revolting, it shouldn't be a bother!"
"No. Helga, no. Take down the mistletoe."
"Yes, Madam Ravenclaw," she muttered. Rowena glared at her, but answered with nothing more than a haughty silence. The two walked quietly for a few moments.
"Wena, could you help me with my books?" Helga finally asked desperately, after nearly running into her third gargoyle. Sighing, her friend made to pull the top half from Helga, but before she could, Helga had made contact with yet another of the castle's objects, though this time she bounced backwards and settled on the floor.
"Ouch!" she cried, rubbing her back. "Sodding gargoyles..."
"Have you been spending much time with Godric?" a voice asked suddenly. "Wherever did you get that language? And I am no gargoyle, I'll have you know." Helga grinned up at Salazar sheepishly.
"Sorry," she said, and allowed him to help her up. "And yes, I have been working with Godric on the gates lately... I suppose he's rubbing off on me," Helga mused, beginning to collect her books. Salazar bent to help her, while Rowena grabbed the few that had scattered in Helga's fall. When every book was safely in her arms, she gave Salazar a brief hug and made to leave with Rowena.
"Ouch!" she moaned again, this time clutching at her forehead. "What was that?!"
"Helga..." Rowena sounded warningly.
"What?"
"Ah!" hissed Salazar from beside her. "I can't move from your side, Helga."
"You ever do?" murmured Rowena.
"You've been spending time with Godric, too," accused Helga. Salazar smirked.
"It's not as if they do any work around the castle at all..." he said innocently, and Rowena sent him a piercing glare.
"Listen, it's not my enchanted mistletoe that has stuck you there!" she announced. With a small shriek, Helga glanced upwards at the... doorway they were under. The words so damn typical flashed into her mind.
"Er, yes, well... Wena was just speaking with me about that," she said, as Salazar stared at her.
"You cannot be serious," he said to her.
"Afraid so." Helga winced and brushed a blonde curl away from her eyes. "I'm sorry, Salazar! I truly didn't realize this would happen!" Awkwardly, he attempted to comfort her.
"That's all right," he said cajolingly. "We just have to kiss, is all..."
"Right," she breathed. "Well... erm, I suppose we might as well... get on with it... uhm..."
Her uncomfortable ramblings were stopped abruptly by a quick peck on the lips from Salazar. It was fleeting, but enough for her to stutter even more when he pulled away.
"Yes, well," Helga said, and she could feel her face heating up. "Erm-Wena, shouldn't we get back to the study?"
The women exchanged their good byes with Salazar and went on their way down the corridor. Rowena smirked at Helga over the small pile of books she carried in her arms.
"Oh, hush!" she ordered.
"I didn't say anything," Rowena protested. "I think it's adorable."
"Nothing is adorable," she grumbled. "It was just- ah, the erm- mistletoe, you know, er..."
"Of course, dear," Rowena sang, linking arms with her best friend. "Always the eloquent one, aren't you?"
