Amos watched as an invisible stairway appeared before him, heading down into the darkness. His feet trembled as they ached to move, to step down onto the path to hell. If he did move, if he took that first step, he would lose himself; he knew this. If he began the descent, there would be no going back. He simply wouldn't be able to climb back up those stairs. It was a very steep stairway.
He didn't want to go down, but the darkness beckoned. And so he went to dinner with Lucius.
It didn't end there.

"Amos," Lucius whispered in his ear, sending chills down Diggory's spine. "You know what I want."
Amos could only nod.
*****
"So," Amos said, much later, lying spent and broken on the bed, feeling as though his very soul had been sucked out of his body. "Just what was that so-called 'proposition' you wanted to offer me?"
Lucius laughed, his fingers splayed across Amos's stomach. "You've already accepted it."
Amos felt sick.
*****
He hadn't wanted to do it, of course. He had a family now, a family that he loved, truly. But there was something about Lucius Malfoy that would never stop drawing him in, tainting and terrorizing him. It was magic in the moment, magic of the oldest sort, sparks that burned as they touched one another. It wasn't until afterward that the full weight of what he had done lay upon him.
Amos went home to his wife and kissed her goodnight, as he always did. He crawled into his own bed and closed his eyes to sleep, promising himself that it would not happen again, not ever.
But still, the stairway called to him, and he would descend into the dark.

Date: 2010-11-13 06:45 pm (UTC)Oh, but nasty, nasty Amos. Cheating is not a good thing. How long will he be able to live with the huge weight of his conscience? Georgiana will notice. I know it's her, you can make it official. :D
Beautiful writing and use of the prompt! Loved it.
