Lucius was different after the Easter holiday, which he had spent back home at the Manor. Amos noticed it instantly; his usual Malfoy swagger had vanished. He had kept it up through the ostracizing of Slytherin; it shocked Amos that it should deflate now, when he was so close to freedom.

"Malfoy," he said, placing a hand on Lucius's shoulder. "Was your holiday stressful?"

"I have class to get to, Amos," Lucius replied. To any casual observer, he spoke as he always had. But Amos saw through the disguise.

He waited outside the Room of Requirement for an hour, pacing the halls as his nerves grew steadily worse. They'd gotten to him; they had to have. His father had discovered that he had abandoned Slytherin, and they'd forced him back into the proper Malfoy alignment. Amos shook his head and gritted his teeth. He should have seen it coming. They both should have seen it coming.

"Why did you go home, Lucius?" He said angrily, shoving Malfoy as hard as he could. Lucius teetered but did not lose his balance; he stared at Amos with blank eyes. "You claimed to be through with this. Why did you return to them?"

"Malfoy Manor is my home," Lucius said slowly. "It has nothing to do with darkness." He scratched his forearm, and avoided Amos's gaze.

"I'm not sure about that," Amos said, his eyes narrowed. He shut the door behind him, leaving Lucius alone in the cold.

Amos picked up the Daily Prophet and snorted; there had been a rash of disappearances and murders over the break, even more than usual. The reporters speculated that whoever was behind the spreading darkness had somehow managed to increase his forces. So it wasn't just his own life that was steadily declining.

"Amos," said Lucius, pulling at Diggory's robes. "Trust me, I beg of you. I care for you still."

There was misery in Malfoy's eyes; Amos did not like the change. He was used to being the weaker of the two, the fear and confusion to Lucius's own arrogance and surety. "I know," said Amos, taking Lucius Malfoy by the hand. "I do trust you." But he couldn't say how much.

He. Is. Scratching. His. Forearm! NO! *shakes Lucius* Why did you do that? How can you say such things to Amos and destroy that beautiful relationship in the next moment? I know it's going to end badly. Amos won't allow that. Even if he tries to now...

Ah, and I love that style you tried out. It took me a moment to understand that it actually jumps around, but then it delivered the emotions and passing time really well. Great chapter! *goes back to shake Lucius*
