"Hey, Diggory! Are you gonna drink that?"
Amos shook himself out of a reverie and looked blankly across the table, where Miles Corner was gesturing excitedly to the still-full glass of butterbeer sitting in front of Amos. "Pardon me?"
Miles laughed. "You haven't touched your drink, mate."
"Oh." Amos half-heartedly forced some liquid down his throat. He was having trouble swallowing; the corner was haunted.
It was odd, indeed, the sort of things one remembered in times of stress. Amos could clearly see the shadow of his very own self, wedged tightly in the far corner of the Three Broomsticks. It had happened at the end of a normal trip to Hogsmeade, as the groups of happy Hogwarts students had swarmed out into the cold on their way back to the castle. Lucius had grabbed hold of Amos's arm and dragged him towards the back, away from the eyes of others. "I don't think this is a good idea," Amos had spluttered, casting wary glances back and forth. "What if somebody catches us?"
"The barmaids are in the back, washing the glasses," Lucius had replied calmly. "Stop worrying so, or we'll give them time to catch us."
Amos had never dared to admit it, but he'd been secretly thrilled by the encounter, kissing Lucius Malfoy in an empty tavern. Perhaps that was part of his Malfoy obsession as a whole -- the sense of danger. It would certainly explain why his heart still ached, even after knowing what Lucius was capable of.
Malfoy was not in the Three Broomsticks on this afternoon. Still, Amos could see him, lurking in the corner, waiting to kiss Amos again. He would always be there, haunting Amos until he gave in to his desire. It was going to happen, sooner or later. He could feel it.
"Fancy a trip to Honeydukes after this?" Miles asked, and Amos nodded blindly, not even hearing the question.
