Author's Notes: Thanks to
severity_softly for inspiring my Lupigrew love and beta-reading. I know this is just THAT side of the word count, but I promise the next instalments are shorter! I'm doing the prompts as a series, and this one is setting it all up. This is 1/13.

"Forget-me-nots," Peter said in disgust. "He got her Forget-me-nots. What a bloody soppish thing to do." He threw a card onto the pile growing between them on the blanket.
Remus shrugged. "Might work." He glanced at his hand, pulled out a jack that was mooning him, and tossed it down. "That one's mine."
Peter swore idly and handed over a Knut. "You always have the luck," he remarked, grinning at Remus.
"Nice to know I can make a living as a card sharp if being a werewolf makes me unemployable." Remus gathered the cards and tapped them with his wand to make them shuffle themselves.
Truth be known, he was jealous of James. It might be true that Lily had been consistent in rejecting him over the past few years, but at least no one was calling James a pervert for his persistence and interest. If Remus were to give flowers to the person he fancied...
"Moony, is everything all right?" Peter frowned at him. "You've seemed...well, a bit glum, lately." He didn't pick up the hand Remus had just dealt.
"Everything's changing, that's all. In just over a month, we'll be out there--" He waved vaguely. "--looking for work and trying to be adults. I'm just..." Remus shrugged.
Peter reached over and refilled Remus' glass with contraband Snakebite and black--cider, lager, blackcurrent, and Ashwinder venom--and nudged Remus' knee. "Not ready to grow up, is that it?" he teased.
"Are you?" Remus countered. He took a sip and made a face. Snakebite and black was by no means a refined drink, its sole purpose to get one well pissed. Then again, with James wining and dining Lily at Madam Puddifoot's and Sirius doing something rather less romantic with Marlene McKinnon, Peter and Remus might as well get well pissed; they were on their own.
Which suited Remus fine, these days, if he only knew what to do with such an opportunity. He wasn't sure exactly when he'd started looking at Peter in a different light, when he'd noticed the flecks of green in Peter's brown eyes, or that he looked sweet when he put on his glasses to read the board in class. Remus just knew he enjoyed the time he spent with Peter, and that Peter was the one person who wasn't changing in all the flurry as they got ready to leave school.
"Not really," Peter said. He took a drink, too. "Not much choice, though."
After Halloween during their fourth year, Peter had begun vanishing. Remus wasn't even sure if the others had noticed, but he'd begun watching Peter more closely by then. He fancied he saw a quiet sadness in the other boy, and he hated the thought that their friend might be hiding some pain from them.
One night Remus had woken to see Peter climbing out the alcove window from their dorm. He hadn't quite panicked, but he'd lunged out of bed, ready to cast Levicorpus if Peter threw himself off the tower. Instead, he'd finished climbing out the window, then turned and peered back in, a tiny grin on his face. "You can come with me, Moony, if you promise not to tell the others."
Remus had nodded, so Peter extended a hand back inside and pulled Remus through. To Remus' surprise, there was a foot-wide ledge just outside the window. Peter's grin widened and he tugged Remus to the right, around to where the tower met the rest of the castle. There, Peter leapt onto a stone shelf just wide enough to spread a blanket out and stargaze.
He was grinning in proud excitement, and Remus remembered that he'd gone to bed with his curtains drawn. Peter had set this up.
"This is great, Pete," he said, smiling. "How'd you find it?"
Peter shrugged, still grinning broadly. "Can't say. But I don't mind sharing with you."
The simple declaration, that Remus somehow meant more to him than the others, had won Remus over. Ever since, they'd come out here together to do homework or get away or have a smoke.
Peter lit two fags and held one out to Remus. Their fingers brushed when he took it, making Remus' tingle. Peter settled back against the wall next to Remus and squinted out across the school grounds. They were silent for a while, watching the smoke float away.
"Change isn't always bad, is it?" Peter asked after a while, his voice low. "Don't you ever have things you'd like to change?"
Remus exhaled. "What, like the werewolf registry and the laws against teaching us magic?"
Peter laughed softly. "Sort of." He was quiet for a minute. "I mean, like James and Lily. If you had someone you'd fancied for a long time--we're all leaving, and you might never see--that person again...wouldn't you want to change it?"
Remus didn't know. He was comfortable with unrequited longing. He knew what to expect from unrequited longing. He shrugged. "I think I might." He Vanished his cigarette and turned to face Peter--
--who kissed him.
Remus froze for a moment, then curled his hand around Peter's elbow, pulling him closer and gasping in surprise and pleasure. Peter's lips were warm and chapped, his head tilted up just a little to make up for the three centimetres between them in height. Remus traced his tongue along Peter's lips, and then their tongues were sliding against each other.
When they broke apart, he held Peter against him. His heart was beating wildly. Peter's brown-and-green eyes were bright, his lips red and wet.
"You're special, Moony," he whispered. "You know that, don't you? You've always been special."
Remus couldn't let go of him. "I've always wished I were special to someone. To you. I like you so much, Pete."
He felt stupid as soon as he said it, like he ought to have chosen his words more carefully, used Peter's full name, or his nickname, or said he fancied him, or...
Then he looked, really looked, at Peter's face, and he realised it didn't matter at all.
Peter pulled away just enough to reach into an inside robe pocket. When his fingers reappeared, they clutched a wilted, blue flower.
"I nicked one of Lily's flowers," he murmured. "So you'll never forget me."
