Katie sat on the front stoop and looked out at the street. Groups of Muggle families strolled by casually, talking amongst themselves and generally not paying attention to their surroundings. Katie twirled her wand idly in her hands, knowing that nobody would notice and not really caring either way. It was nice to sit here, smack in the middle of Muggle London, where she could feel like part of the crowd and be safe with her secrets. She could cast a spell right there and nobody would say anything. She could watch the Muggles all day, laughing and shopping and travelling to and from their boring Muggle jobs, completely unaware of the changes going on around them.
The Daily Prophet was full of it, stories of change, new policies at the Ministry and new people in power. Katie read each edition eagerly, happy for the honesty, the effort. Things weren't perfect; they never would be. But they were better.
"What are you doing with that?" Angelina tucked her skirt neatly beneath her legs as she sat down beside Katie on the steps. She plucked Katie's wand out of her hands and laid it gently in her lap. "People will think you're mad."
Katie smiled at her. "I don't care." She reached out tentatively, touched Angie's leg, the smooth silk of her clothing. This was what she worried about, the newness of this, touching one another in public. She could cast spells in front of Muggles but still feared sitting next to a woman.
Angelina seemed to sense this; she threw a graceful arm around Katie's shoulders and pulled the blonde in closer. "You act like you've never seen women sitting together before."
Katie laughed nervously, picking up her wand and staring down at the finely crafted wood. "Well, what if people see us differently for who we are? I don't want to be looked down on."
"They're going to look down on you for holding your bloody wand out, you silly nit." Angelina kissed Katie's cheek and rose from her seat, her warmth sliding along Katie's bare arms with electricity crackling through her nerves. "Come, I'm making lunch. You wouldn't want it to get cold."
"I'm sure I could use a spell to reheat it," Katie said with a smirk, but she rose, pulling her hair back and staring out at the streets, the clueless Muggles, unaware of the ending war and the newness, the change, unaware of the lesbian witches living in their building, chanting spells and sleeping in the same bed. Katie felt safe in the innocence, in the invisibility of her situation. Someday, maybe, people would know, and that would be all right. For now, she was happy to hide, twirling her wand in front of them and smiling as they passed her by.
"Well, there's no spell you can use to reheat me, is there?" Angelina asked, pulling gently on Katie's arm as she opened the door.
"Not with my wand, maybe," Katie replied, and the two of them laughed as they headed up the stairs to their flat. No, things would never be perfect, but for now, Katie felt safe there with Angelina, curled up in their stronghold in London.
