Free fall

No one had seen it coming. The entire world had seemed to disappear around Percy and all he could hear was a scream, one he realized too late, was his own. But there Oliver was, free falling from his broom unconscious. Millions of eyes were upon him as the cheers suddenly turned into a series of hushes and gasps. Why hadn’t someone done something? Why weren’t the referee’s flying up to catch him? Was the game so serious that it would see one of its players killed for the sake of fair play?

When it was clear that Oliver wasn’t going to regain consciousness in the air the wands were brought out and quick spells were cast to try and catch him. Percy saw it was too late though, too late for the spells to do anything other than soften the blow. He was sure that had he been on the pitch himself that Oliver would have hit with a sickening crunch.

His heart jumped into his throat and seemed to stop him from taking in any air as a medical group rushed out onto the green gathering the fallen keeper. There was a quick announcement over the sounds of the crowds but Percy was too distant to hear the exact details, all he could think about was how to get by the massing crowds and to Oliver.

As he pushed his way through the cheering spectators, a replacement keeper rose into the air and took Oliver’s position in front of three hoops. Without a moments delay the game continued as Percy rushed down the wet steps, slipped and sliding as he took them in twos. When he finally made it under the bleachers he was thoroughly soaked, cloak wrapping around his legs as he jogged towards the medical site.

He was out of breath when he finally spotted the tent, people coming and going every few minutes. Percy slowed his pace as he approached the tent, but before he could go in a man stepped between him and his destination.

“No one’s allowed in, sorry. Private medical tent passed here. Best turn around and go to the public health area.” The man explained, “Three flights up.”

“I’m not sick you daft buzzard, I’m here to check on Oliver Wood. You know, the keeper for Puddlemere United?” Percy said, agitated by being stopped.

The man just stared at him then frowned. “No admittance.”

“Look here, I’m not some cheeky fan trying to get in, nor am I a tabloid writer. I’m his-his...” he stumbled around the words; they felt awkward in his mouth. “...I’m family. So let me through.”

“What’s your name?” The bouncer seemed determined to keep Percy from entering.

“Weasley, Percy.” He said quickly, fidgeting from foot to foot. “Please would you hurry?”

Shaking his head, the man disappeared behind the curtained entrance of the tent, leaving a very paranoid Percy trying to keep his mind occupied. There was rustling behind the tent door and a few raised voices before a woman came out. She approached Percy with a tired smile.

“I’m sorry Mr. Weasley. Mr. Wood was instructed to give you a badge to allow you access to the locker rooms and such.” She explained, looking over her clipboard.

Percy looked at her rather aggravated; he couldn’t remember a damned badge when Oliver was lying unconscious behind some cloth doors.

“You don’t happen to have it with you perchance?”

“No.” He said curtly.

“I see.” She looked him over then back at her clipboard. “Well you are mentioned, but in the future please remember the badge. It’s not Samuels’s job to look you up on a list of admitting.” The woman waved her hand and turned, “if you’ll follow me.”

She led him through the curtained doors and into a partition of the tent. “Seems he’s suffered a concussion but other than that, no noticeable physical or emotional problems. Mr. Woods very lucky he was unconscious at the time of the free fall. This prevented his body from seizing up on impact and breaking any bones.”

They went through another curtain into a larger room. There were dozens of witches and wizards scurrying about between the twenty beds that were set up. At the far corner, Percy spotted Oliver; he was awake now, reading a chart to who Percy could only assume was the doctor. As they approached, Oliver turned his attention to the soaking Weasley. A grin spread across his face and he gave a small wave but winced when he noticed the look on Percy’s face.

The woman spun on her heels, giving Percy a small smile and nod before taking off in the direction they had come.

“Ah, Mr. Weasley, I was just telling Mr. Wood he would be released just as soon as the game has ended, gathered that he come see me first thing in the morning to determine if there has been any permanent damage we can’t see.” The Doctor explained. “For now though, I’ll leave you two alone.” He gathered up the charts and after looking over Oliver one last time disappeared amid the masses of other medical volunteers.

Percy turned his attention back to Oliver, a silent line covering his face.

“It’s not as bad as it looked Percy, honest.”

“How would you know what it looked like, you were unconscious.” Percy pointed out.

Oliver’s grin seemed to shift into a weak smile, “I suppose you’re right. “

“I’m always right.” Percy said, pulling up a seat and sitting down beside Oliver’s bed.

“Doc says I’ll be fine.” Oliver said, pointing at his temple. “A bit dizzy, but fine.”

Percy wanted to slap that silly grin from Oliver’s face, but he knew better. “Have you any idea what I was thinking seeing you free fall like that? How I thought you might be dead when you hit the ground?”

Oliver’s reached out a hand and took Percy’s in his own. “Aw, you were really worried about me after a silly little fall like that?”

Percy snapped his hand away and rolled his eyes. “I’m in love with an idiot.”

Oliver laughed, “Funny how that works out.”
