She didn't know how long she'd been there, trapped in her little square of bamboo trees, watching the people go by. She'd tried to be friendly, but no one had ever noticed, and she'd gone endlessly ignored, sadly chewing her bamboo and wondering what the point was. But then, one day, the fires came. And the students were running, clutching wands instead of schoolbooks, screaming curses instead of giggling with their friends. Tall figures in black hoods darted about, and the panda ducked behind her favorite tree, paws trembling.
A young woman stopped before her, a black girl with high cheekbones, her wand held aloft, burning anger in her eyes. Words in a language she couldn't understand, this little patched bear in her tasty bamboo forest, and a hooded man fell, hands on his chest. The woman grinned and shook her hair back, glanced behind her as she readied her wand.
There were more of them, hooded evils, but the human couldn't see them, was busy looking behind her, cocky and excited, unseeing. The bear quivered behind her tree. What would she do, this young, beautiful girl? She started to move away, going in the wrong direction, they were coming closer and she wouldn't know.
"Look out!" The panda screamed, alarm bubbling up her throat. It came out as a shriek, a miniature roar, but it was enough, and the girl turned, eyes wide. The hooded men gasped, flicked their wands, but the human was ready, voice hoarse as she shouted at them in her foreign tongue, shoving them back, flashes of light slamming into their chests.
"Angelina!" A new woman, panting, blonde hairs spilling haphazardly out of her ponytail, skidded to a stop beside the black girl, gripping her shoulder with trembling hands. "Thank Merlin you're all right."
"I wouldn't be if this painting hadn't shouted," said Angelina, casually flicking her wand at the panda.
The blonde girl leaned in close, smiling at the bear. She wasn't used to such attention; warmth bloomed in her chest. "You saved her," said the young woman, breathless. "She could have died."
There was a silence then, and the girls looked at one another. She didn't know what this was, had never seen so much human interaction all at once, but somehow she was part of it, she had helped, and this astounded her. She stepped out from behind her tree, desperate for more, her gaze drinking in the two young women.
"You know, this is tiring," said Angelina, glancing behind her before stowing her wand away. "I'm not going to die before I kiss you, Katie Bell."
The blonde squeaked, legs involuntarily jerking her backwards, but Angelina was faster, surer, hands wrapping about Katie Bell's waist and pulling her close, smashing her lips upon the nervous blonde's.
And she watched, the little painted panda, not fully understanding, only knowing that something important was happening, magic and fear and this new thing, hands and lips and stifled moans. They came apart, slowly, and Katie smiled. "I had no idea."
"Yeah, well, there's a war on," said Angelina, pulling her wand back out, eyeing their surroundings warily. "You've got to take what you can while it's still around."
Katie gasped and reached for Angelina's hand. "Oh, you can't leave me now, not again."
Angelina grinned. "I won't," she said smugly, pulling Katie out of sight down the corridor.
She had helped them somehow, these girls, opened their eyes to the things they could miss if they didn't pay attention, and wasn't saving two people and bringing them together more than any other Hogwarts painting could claim? And so the little panda went happily back to chewing on her bamboo tree, heart swelled with the pride of finally discovering her purpose.
