Everywhere Katie Bell looked, Angelina Johnson was there. She was sitting at the Gryffindor table for breakfast, walking across the grounds after lunch, sitting in the common room in the evenings. Katie missed Quidditch, where it was safe to see Angelina, where she could hide behind passing the Quaffle and soaring past on her broomstick. Without practices to ground her, Katie felt just like a Bludger, roaming aimlessly and crashing against unsuspecting flyers.

It would be all right if everyone would just stop talking about the cursed Yule Ball. It seemed there was not a single soul in the castle who wasn't interested in what gowns would be worn and who was going with whom. Katie faced embarrassment every time she ventured out of bed, every time she came up against clueless teenage girls who thought it was funny to tease a conflicted Bludger without a date.

"You've just got to go with somebody, Katie, it won't be any fun otherwise," said Leanne, who had somehow managed to get herself a date with a Durmstrang boy. "I mean, that's what it's all about, isn't it? It's not a Ball without a dance partner."

This was all well and good for Leanne, who knew what she wanted, but Katie was stuck in a corner with a pounding in her skull and a penchant for staring at Angelina Johnson. She never noticed, of course, always deep in some conversation with Alicia, but still Katie lived in fear of that one moment, the instant Angelina looked up and realized who was across from her.

A girl couldn't ask another girl to a ball; it was completely unheard of, not to mention indecent. Katie imagined the look on Angelina's face, blank confusion dissolving into giggles, the fake sympathy and the pat on the back. "I'm sorry; I've already got a date. Why don't you ask Lee, I've heard he's still available?"

And so she sat in her corners and dashed her head against the walls, and watched Fred Weasley ask Angelina to the ball. She accepted, of course, and Katie could only watch, watch the dancing crowd of happy Hogwarts students, carefree and excited, safe in their bubbles and ignorant of Katie Bell's inner turmoil.

And across the hall sat Angelina, her face flushed with the heat of the dance floor, eyes wandering the crowd as she searched, searched fruitlessly for a girl she'd been thinking of much too often lately, a girl who she'd hoped to dance with tonight. But Katie was too far away, and they missed one another.
