Title: Polyjuicing Your Way Into Love
Pairing: Severus Snape/Narcissa Black
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 1185
Summary: He was staring at Lily again and Narcissa noticed.
Author's Notes: I tweaked Narcissa's age a bit. I know she's supposed to attend Hogwarts circa 1966, but for the sake of the story I'm making her attend Hogwarts from 1971-1978 to fit the story line. This would make the Narcissa in my story a little younger than she is in canon. Warning: By the end of this story you might be left with more questions than answers.
He was staring at Lily again. He was doing his best to hide it, but she noticed. Narcissa Black noticed because she was sitting across from Severus Snape as he indulged in one of his favorite past times - staring at Lily Evans. They were supposed to be studying in the library for their N.E.W.T.s, but instead he was eyeing Lily. It was absolutely disgusting to say the least, but Narcissa was his friend. She needed to support him in this; even if she didn't agree with it, even if it made her jealous. She hated to admit such feelings to herself.
It hadn't always made her feel jealous. It was only recently that it started bothering her really. The change in her reaction came from feeling that Severus was spending too much time around Lily and not enough time with her. Narcissa and Severus met in the Great Hall after the sorting ceremony, where they immediately hit it off. They both loved Potions and spoke eloquently to each other on the topic. They both felt relieved that someone finally understood where they were coming from. Their new friendship was intriguing and bordered on mysterious because of his frequent absence from the Slytherin common room. During their third year she discovered that those absences were due to his friendship with Lily.
Narcissa was the first one to question his friendship with Lily, but she was also the first one to accept it. It didn't take her long to find out that Lily was a Mudblood. She had that Mudblood look to her. She knew this could be big trouble for Severus, so she covered it up. She helped him hide the friendship from the prying eyes of others. She discovered that she cared for Severus as more than just a friend during their fourth year. Severus got into a fight with James Potter and ended up in the hospital wing. Once she found this out she rushed to the hospital wing to see him. When she got there Lily was by his bedside interrogating him and promising him she would lash out at James for this. Upon her arrival Lily excused herself and left.
"Cissy, how did you find out I was here?"
"I have my sources, Sev."
"I underestimated you."
"You always do."
A year later she was relieved to discover that Lily and Severus had a falling out. She was surprised by it because she never thought anything could tear the two of them apart. She was almost compelled to congratulate James Potter for helping her to separate them, but she knew that would be unwise. Unfortunately their falling out meant that Severus snuck glances at her whenever he got the chance. Since he couldn't talk to her on a regular basis anymore, he had to settle for just staring at her. Narcissa kicked Severus' leg under the table causing him to flinch in pain.
"What?"
"Stop staring at her."
Severus gathered his books.
"Where are you going?"
"I'm done studying."
"Come on, Sev."
"No, you're right. I'm not accomplishing anything in here. We'll continue this in the Slytherin common room in an hour."
"The library is for everyone Sev. You shouldn't let a Mudblood like her stop you from doing your work."
"Don't call her that!"
He stormed away before Narcissa could get the chance to apologize. She had said it out of anger, but a part of her truly meant it. She knew this. He knew this. That's what really upset him. As he left the library Lily watched him exit. Narcissa's fists clenched when she witnessed this. She gathered her books and walked over to the table Lily occupied along with her friend Dorcas Meadowes. The two girls were knee deep in work. It was obvious from the books, parchment and quills that littered their table. She cleared her throat.
"Can I help you, Black?"
"I was just wondering if any of the books on your table are on Advanced Potion making."
As Lily rummaged through the books, Narcissa pretended to drop a quill and as she bent down to pick it up she pulled a strand of Lily's hair. She shrieked as the hair came loose from her scalp.
"What was that for?" Lily asked.
"What are you talking about?"
It was Dorcas' turn to give Narcissa a dirty look. Narcissa pretended to look through her bag and replied, "Oh, never mind, I have a book that will be just as good." She strolled away before either girl could argue with her. It took her a few months to get the potion ready, but she was patient. Severus wasn't going anywhere and he didn't suspect a thing. Once the potion was ready she sent Severus a note asking him to meet her in one of the abandoned classrooms in the dungeons around midnight. She figured the Head Girl and Boy would be done with their rounds by then, the prefects retired from their shifts earlier in the evening. She added a piece of the strand of hair to the potion causing it to instantly turn into a dark muddy color, and it bubbled sluggishly.
She was pleased to see that Severus had reached the classroom first. That's what she wanted. She took her time getting there to make it seem like she had to come down to the dungeons from the seventh floor. She didn't want him getting suspicious before she was able to kiss him. It's the only thing she wanted and the only way to get it was to trick him into giving it to her. She couldn't forcefully kiss him because his reaction might anger her. She didn't want to be angry with him because she knew he would have every right to be.
"You came?" she said.
"Of course I came. Are you surprised?"
"I am actually. I didn't think you'd show up."
"It's been a while since we've spoken."
She didn't know what to say to him. She hadn't thought that far ahead. A part of her didn't believe she would get this far and now that she was living this moment she was proud of herself. She didn't know how Severus and Lily interacted so she couldn't wing it. Instead she decided to do what she intended all along, she neared Severus and before he could take a breath she kissed him. The shock of receiving the kiss made him take two steps back.
"I'm sorry! I shouldn't have done that. I'll go now," she said hurriedly.
Severus grabbed her wrist and hissed, "What is the meaning of this? Who are you?"
Narcissa couldn't keep the surprise off her face. "What do you mean? I'm..."
"...not Lily."
"How can you be sure?"
"Do not lie to me, Narcissa."
"How did you know it was me?"
"That's none of your concern."
"I underestimated you."
"You always do."
