Title: Wow, Magic?
Pairing: Hermione/Charlie
Prompt: tinkering
Rating: G
Word Count: 488
Summary: A young Charlie witnesses an interesting scene while at the beach with the family.
Author's Notes: This is my first one, finally! I haven’t had the chance to start this. This is just a cute idea that popped into my mind randomly while I was at the beach, watching the cutest little girl trying to build a sandcastle that kept getting washed away lol. It’s really not my best by any means, but I just need to get back into the groove of it :), so forgive me if it sounds rather basic lol.

The waves crashed against the shore, the clear waters becoming foamy and leaving behind tangles of seaweed. Charlie subconsciously swirled sand with his feet, reveling in the feel of the grains running through his toes, as he watched a young girl nearby tinkering with a stick.

His family had laid out a picnic blanket across the beach, but he preferred the comfort of the shore. He smiled, watching her repeatedly mutter frustrated words as she fiddled with a half-constructed sandcastle; soon after, a colossal wave wiped away all remains of the muddy lump.

Charlie chuckled and decided to approach the girl. “Hi there.” His shadow, large for his 12-year old self, blanketed over her.

The girl ignored him, and continued to clean out the sand from her bouncy, brown pigtails.

“Hi,” he repeated.

“My mommy says I can’t talk to strangers,” she said snootily.

He chuckled at her tone, amused by her determination.

“Well I couldn’t help but notice you do some weird things. I’m Charlie.” He pointed at the stick, a knowing look in his eyes.

She looked from the stick, to Charlie, to her parents who sat near his, and then back to Charlie. “I’m Hermione.” She looked around before whispering, “I can do magic.”

Charlie feigned surprise, crouching down to her height. “Really? Can you show me?”

“It only works sometimes. Look.” She concentrated on the sandbox, but nothing happened. “Argh!” She threw her hands up, frustrated. Just then a handful of sand flew up into the air.

“See?” She jumped back, frightened. “What if they send me away, or kill me, like they did to all the other witches during the Salem witch trials?

Charlie retreated. “How old are you?”

“Six.”

“And you know all about the Salem witch trials?”

“I read a lot,” she said stuffily.

“Well, Hermione, they won’t be doing that to you.” Leaning in, he whispered, “I’m a wizard, too.”

“No you’re not.” She crossed her arms.

He chuckled. “Yes I am.”

“No, you’re not.”

Charlie was glad to know she had some essence of a six year-old in her. “You don’t believe me?”

She raised an eyebrow. “Prove it.”

He took out his-

“Wand?” she said, eyes growing large. She backed away a little.

“No. it’s okay.” He softened his voice, “Don’t be scared. Watch this.”

He pointed it at the sandbox and immediately a sandcastle appeared.

“Whoa…” Hermione squealed, eyes wide.

“Charlie!”

He rapidly pocketed his wand. “My mom is calling me. I’ve got to go.”

“But–”

“You’ll be alright. You just need to get used to your magic.” He smiled fondly. “I promise you, great things will happen to you… you’ll see things you never thought possible. Amazing things.”

“Like flying? And magic spells? And dragons?”

He nodded. “And a real castle, just like that one.” He pointed at the sand castle, and her eyes grew big.

“Take care, Hermione.”

He walked away and looked back to see Hermione smiling at the sandbox. His heart felt a whole lot lighter. He hoped to run into her again someday.

Adorable. Absolutely adorable. And such a great way to bring the two of them together! I can't wait to see how they interact when they're grown up.

Yay, the first installment of this series! I like Hermione's characterization a lot. She seems like a kid who would really, really annoy me =] Very much true to her character.

This sentence struck me as odd: "Well I couldn’t help but notice you do so me weird things." It took me a few times until I realized that it was "some" not "so me." (but that was because on my computer they were on two separate lines)

A six year old and a twelve year old, huh? That's a big difference when you're that young. Let's hope he meets her when they're much, much older? Jk, I know they do, but I want to see how you make it work!

Good job on this. It was cute.

This was very cute. I like how even at six, Hermione had a mouth on her and wasn’t afraid to say what was right.)

“My mommy says I can’t talk to strangers,” she said snootily.

I love that, and how she reads all about the Salem Witch Trials. Oh, Hermione, I just love her. xD Your characterizations are spot on, and I really enjoyed the end. :)
