flipflop_diva ! I really hope that you like it. Warnings for homophobia, and angst.
“Hermione, I’m not sure about this,” Daphne said nervously as she tried to smooth the non-existent creases out of her dress.
The two of them were about to tell Daphne’s parents that they were in a relationship together, and Hermione could tell that her girlfriend was afraid about it.
“I know you’re not, and if you really don’t want to do it today then we don’t have to. We will tell them whenever you’re ready to,” Hermione replied.
She knew how nerve wracking it was to tell the people you loved the most that you were gay. She had been a ball of nerves telling her parents, Harry, and the Weasley’s, but luckily for her they all accepted it as if it meant nothing. Hermione had a feeling however, that not everything would be plain sailing with her girlfriends parents which is why she would support Daphne’s decision either way.
“I don’t think I will ever be ready. They will be so disappointed and upset. I’m supposed to have children and carry the name on so it doesn’t die out,” Daphne said fretting.
“You can still do that. We can either adopt, or we could find a sperm donor and one of us carry the baby. If they’re against all of those then suggest that they ask Astoria instead. She is marrying Draco after all,” she suggested.
“I suppose you’re right, and I’m just getting worked up over nothing,” Daphne said before turning to Hermione and asking how she looked.
“Perfect as always.”
Daphne’s words hadn’t settled an ounce of Hermione’s nerves at all and she wished she could have a shot of Firewhiskey for dutch courage, but knew it wouldn’t look good turning up smelling of alcohol. Plus, she didn’t want to worry her even more.
Once they were ready Daphne reached out and said “Take my hand,”
Once she had a hold of Hermione, Daphne Apparated them in front of a large country house.
Despite its size, Hermione thought it looked quite homely.
“I know it’s big, but the family used to all live together until my great-great uncle decided to move out. My grandpa used to tell me that the rooms were once full of children and they used to run around all over the place. It seemed as if he became lonely once they were gone,” Daphne told her.
“Mrs Weasley says she feels that way now all of her children have moved out. I think it’s hard on people at any age to be alone.”
The both of them walked the short distance to the front door, and Daphne opened it without knocking.
Hermione was extremely nervous at this point. It would be the first time that she would be meeting them as Daphne’s girlfriend and she hoped that everything would go well.
“I can’t do this,” Daphne said suddenly and tried to pull away.
“It’s okay, Daphne. Whatever happens I’m here for you. I know you don’t think that they will accept us, but we have to give them the chance to,” she said gently.
“You haven’t heard them before, Hermione. They don’t understand how a person can be gay. They won’t like it. I can’t lose them,” Daphne said starting to cry.
“You won’t lose them. They might not like it, and they might not understand it, but you are their daughter and they love you. All they want is the best for you and it might take them a while to come around, but they will eventually,” Hermione said trying to reassure her.
Once the tears stopped, and Daphne seemed to have her emotions under control they carried on towards the family sitting room.
Once inside Mr and Mrs Greengrass greeted Daphne with a hug and a kiss, and her with a smile.
“No offense Miss Granger, but we weren’t expecting you,” Mrs Greengrass said politely.
“No offense taken, Mrs Greengrass.”
“Mum, Dad, Hermione is here because she is my girlfriend,” Daphne said.
Hermione could hear the slight wobble in her voice despite how strong it came out. She was still terrified about what was going to happen next, and she learnt that it was with good reason.
“What do you mean, Daphne?” her mother asked.
Taking a deep breath she said, “I mean that I’m in love with Hermione, and we are in a relationship.”
“I thought I raised you better than to cavort around with another woman. You should be doing your duty to the family and marry a nice wizard and have children,” Mrs Greengrass said scathingly.
“I’m not cavorting around doing anything! We love each other. I know this isn’t what you wanted for me, but-”
“But nothing, young lady. It’s not right. Not right at all. Tell them Richard,” her mum said bringing her dad into it.
“Your mum has a point, Daphne. We were relying on you to have children and carry on the Greengrass name. I can’t say I understand the fact that you love another woman, but I can understand love,” her dad said calmly.
“That’s all you’re going to say? Our daughter is ruining her life and all you can say is that you ‘understand love’?”
“Adele-” Mr Greengrass started to say before being cut off by his younger daughter.
“Dad’s right, mum. I figured out that they were together a while ago, and I can see that they love each other very much. They’re perfect for each other,” Astoria stated.
The look of horror on Mrs Greengrass’s face was all that Hermione needed to know that it was a good idea to leave, but before she could Mrs Greengrass started talking again.
“I don’t care if you think they are perfect together, Astoria. Your sister should do her duty. Family comes first.”
Hermione stepped forward finally finding her voice.
“I love Daphne very much and all I want is for her to be happy. She knew that coming here today and telling you would be hard, but I never thought you would treat her the way you have. I don’t care what you say about me, but you should never talk about her that way,” Hermione said before guiding Daphne out of the room.
“She’s no daughter of mine,” her mother said just before they walked out.
Hermione heard Astoria start shouting at their mother, but she was more concerned with getting her girlfriend home.
A few hours later the two of them were curled up on the sofa together in silence.
“I’m so sorry, Daphne,” Hermione said stroking her hair.
“It’s okay. I finally feel free to be myself, and my dad...well at least I know that he will come around. I think,” Daphne said with hope.
“I’m sure he will. He did seem the more reasonable out of the two of them, but don’t forget Astoria. I’m certain she’s going to be fighting in our corner as well,” Hermione chuckled.
Just remembering parts of the tirade her girlfriends sister went on at their mum made her smile. Perhaps, for the first time in her life, Adele Greengrass felt what it was like to be ashamed of herself.
A few months later
Hermione was rushing around trying to find her shoes as Daphne finished getting dressed when a knock came at the door.
“I’ll get it!” Hermione shouted.
She had no idea who it could be since most of their friends knew they were going to George and Angelina’s wedding (which they were running late to).
Opening the door, Hermione found Mr Greengrass standing in front of her.
“Hello, Miss Granger, may I come in?” he asked.
“Of course. Daphne will be down in just a second. We’re just getting ready for a friends wedding,” Hermione informed him.
She showed him to the lounge where she offered him a seat.
The two of them sat in silence until they heard Daphne walk down the stairs.
“Hermione, do you think we gave them the right present. I mean I know you said Angelina won’t mind, but isn’t it more geared toward…” Daphne said trailing off when she saw her dad in their lounge.
“Hello, Daphne. I wanted to come and apologise for not seeing you sooner. What you told us came as a shock, but I don’t care if you like men or women, you’re my daughter and I love you. Your mother...needs more time. I just wanted to tell you that I’m here for you if, or when you need me,” he said anxiously.
“I love you too, dad. I’m glad that you came to talk to me,” Daphne said tearfully.
“Could I have a hug?” he asked.
“Of course,” Daphne replied and walked forward.
Her dad pulled her close and hugged her tightly.
“I’ve missed you so much,” she said before her tears started to fall.
“I’ve missed you too, munchkin.”
Hermione watched the exchange silently. She was happy that at least one of her girlfriends parents had come around in the end. It had been hard for Daphne to only have Astoria to turn to apart from her, but she hoped now that wouldn’t be the case.
