Title: Easier to Pretend

Request: ministry lifts
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 670
Summary: Scorpius and Lily get stuck in one of the Ministry lifts.
Author's Notes: Not beta'd. I don't usually write next-gen fics so I hope you like their characterisation.
The magical maintenance department had been working on it for over an hour, but they had not found any problem when they had ran their diagnostic spells. It was a complete mystery as it should be running perfectly.
"I am sorry, Miss Potter, but I am afraid that you and Mr Malfoy are just going to have to wait until it starts working again. For some reason we cannot get the emergency hatch open to get you out," a sympathetic voice said over the intercom.
"It's not that bad. You could be stuck here all on your own," Scorpius said trying to cheer her up.
I would rather be here on my own than stuck with you. Lily thought.
Lily had had a crush on Scorpius for quite a long time, but she had never told anyone about it. At first it was because she was embarrassed that she liked one of her brother's friends, but then she had seen him mess a few girls around and she didn't want that to happen to her.
"You're not even going to answer me?" Scorpius asked eyeing her critically.
"My mother taught me that if I wasn't going to say anything nice, not to say it at all," she replied sounding bored.
"What have I done to make you hate me so much?" Scorpius asked curiously.
"What do you mean?"
"You always seem to turn into the ice queen when I'm around. I can never do anything right even if I'm trying to help you. Why, Lily? Why do you do that?" he asked frustrated.
"Does it matter why?" Lily snapped.
She really didn't want to talk about it.
"Yes, it does. Can't you just be honest with me for once?" Scorpius snapped back.
"No, I can't."
"Do you love being a bitch or something? 'Cause you always seem to put me down."
"That's right it's all about you isn't it. Poor little Scorpius can't understand why a girl doesn't like him," Lily said raising her voice.
"What the hell is that supposed to mean?" Scorpius shouted.
"You think you're god's gift to women and that everyone will fall at your feet, but you're wrong. Not everyone wants you," Lily shouted back.
"What the hell are you talking about? That's got nothing to do with why you don't like me," Scorpius bellowed confused by what Lilly had said.
After a few moments he looked at her and realised what she meant.
"Why didn't you tell me, Lily?" he asked softly.
"Tell you what," she replied irritated.
"That you like me. That's the real reason you're horrible to me isn't it? You don't want to have to admit that you like me because you think that I will hurt you."
"That's not true," Lily said unconvincingly.
"It's not?" he asked trying to get her to tell the truth.
"No… yes…maybe," she answered quietly.
Scorpius stood for her to talk. He thought it would be better than pressing her for answers.
"I've seen all the girls you've been out with, and they're nothing like me. I saw how you've just thrown them away when you got bored, and I didn't want that to happen to me. I thought it would be easier to pretend to hate you than to tell you that I liked you," Lily confessed as she tried to hold back tears.
Scorpius walked forward and cupped Lily's cheek.
"I was trying to distract myself when was with them. All I've ever wanted is you, Lily, and I never thought I would be able to have you," Scorpius told her.
"You really want me?" Lily asked as her tears fell.
"Yes, I do," Scorpius replied as he leant in and kissed her.
At that point the lift started working again and sent them to their destination. It was only when the floor level was announced that the two of them stopped kissing.

Lily Luna Potter was annoyed at the fact that the Ministry lift she was in had broken down.
The magical maintenance department had been working on it for over an hour, but they had not found any problem when they had ran their diagnostic spells. It was a complete mystery as it should be running perfectly.
