As an Auror, you get to do exciting things. I think that’s why Lily wants to be one, even if it scares dear old James.

“It’s not a safe job,” he tells her for perhaps the hundredth time as we sit together in the Gryffindor common room. “We’re joining the Order as it is, and that’s dangerous enough.”

“James,” she replies evenly, rolling her eyes, “Life’s about taking chances. You shouldn’t worry so much. If the Order is such a dangerous thing to join, then being an Auror cannot be all that much worse. It’s almost the same thing.”

“It’s not the same thing at all,” he argues with a groan. I remain quiet in my seat, watching them argue. They’ve had this discussion often recently, ever since Lily started bringing the topic up. With our seventh year well underway, we are very close to being able to join such organisations and applying for these sorts of dangerous jobs. Only James doesn’t want Lily in more danger than she has to be.

There’s a psycho on the loose, killing at will. The three of us, along with Sirius and Peter, plan to join the Order to protect people. Lily wants to go that extra mile and apply for a job as an Auror as well. I know she could do it, and deep down I think James knows too. And that probably scares him more than anything. He knows that she would be capable of the job, but also that she would be that much bigger of a target on Voldemort’s list if he got wind of her. And James loves her way too much to want her in anymore danger than she already will be.

“It is the same James. Let me choose what I want to do with my time.”

“Not if it’s going to get you killed.”

“James,” she reminds, placing a hand on his knee, “We’re all going to take chances by joining the Order anyway. Let me choose what I want to do.”

“Fine,” he snaps, standing. I know James is just worried about Lily staying safe, but he’s only going to annoy her by being too protective. Lily is more than capable of handling herself. All four of us know that by now.

After James has stormed off and up to the dormitories, I turn and face Lily. She’s muttering under her breath, annoyed with the situation.

“He means well,” I say, earning a glare. “He just wants you to stay safe.”

“Oh, I know Remus,” she groans, rubbing her eyes. “And I really do love James. But he has to understand that if I’m standing up for what I believe in, I’m going to do everything I can to defend my cause. Applying to be an Auror will make me that much more prepared.”

“But it will also distract you,” I remind, trying to appeal to James’s side of the story. “You’ll be half focused on Auror training and half focused on whatever plan the Order is trying to go through with. Splitting your focus might not be such a good idea at a time like this. Maybe if you wait until after Voldemort’s taken down, then you’ll be more prepared to study and focus on Auror training. Then your attention won’t be split.”

“You think it’s worth waiting for.”

“Of course! You have your whole life ahead of you Lily.”

“Yes, as long as I don’t die young.”

“You won’t. You’re a fighter, and we all know that. You’re going to do amazing things in your lifetime.”

She chuckled. “Well, I hope so. It’s the intention anyway.”

“Exactly, so there’s no real reason to rush things. You’ll have plenty of time later to follow your dreams, once your cause is complete.”

“To take down Voldemort?” I nod. “Well, it is a noble cause.”

“Exactly. And if you help defeat him I bet that you won’t even have to take the entry tests to become an Auror. You could start studying right away.”

“Thank you Remus. I guess I see James’s point now.”

“I’m sure he’ll be happy to hear that. He just wants you constantly prepared. He doesn’t want to run the risk of losing you.”

“I know.” She moves, turning to hug me. “Thanks Remus, you’re a great friend.”

“I know,” I reply with a roll of my eyes. “Shall I go get him so you two can talk?”

“Don’t worry. It will be much more fun if I surprise him in the morning.”

I arch an eyebrow, wondering what she has planned. When you’re talking about Lily, you never really know what to expect.

“Well, I can’t wait to see your plan.”

“Trust me Remus, it’s going to be fabulous.”
