Anthony had the bright idea of reading some Muggle holiday books. "This is stupid," Michael complained, scratching the side of his face. Anthony's spell had left some magical residue or something, because he was itching like mad.
"You're just jealous you didn't think of it," Anthony said. The both of them were transfigured to look like gargoyles, their faces ugly and stony. It was quite a good bit of magic, Michael had to admit. "Free Honeydukes candy and all we have to do is ask? It's brilliant."
"I still don't understand it, though," Michael said, peering down into his empty pillowcase. "We just go from dorm to dorm asking for treats?"
"Not just treats," Anthony reminded him, grinning. "Tricks or treats. See, it says that if you don't get the candy you want, you get to pull a trick on the person. A Halloween tradition I can get behind."
"Muggles are weird," Michael decided.
"Weirdly brilliant," Anthony corrected.
Everything started out all right; they made their way slowly up through Ravenclaw tower, bugging each of the males they encountered for tricks or treats (they couldn't get into the girls' dorms, of course, but Anthony said girls never had any good candy, anyway. Michael wasn't so sure about that, but he went along with it). Most of their housemates gave them odd looks and inquired as to the purpose of their expedition, but a quick explanation from Anthony seemed to fascinate them, and the two boys walked away with a bit of chocolate in their bags and a fresh set of Trick or Treat converts behind them.
"You see, it's working perfectly," Anthony said, his voice muffled around the large bite of chocolate in his mouth.
"I think you're supposed to wait to finish before you start in on the haul," Michael said with a laugh.
But they never actually finished, because of what they found in their very own dorm room. Michael had wanted to skip it, reasoning that nobody was in there anyway, but Anthony insisted that it wouldn't be a complete Trick or Treat if they didn't knock on every door, and besides, "What if Terry's come back and we just haven't noticed? We can't leave without seeing Terry. I know he hasn't got any candy, and I so desperately want to trick him."
"Fine," said Michael. "It is fun, bothering Terry."
So they knocked on the door. There was no response, and after a moment Michael was about to give up and move along. But Anthony wouldn't let it go. "Terry, you'd best be in there," he shouted, and barged into the room.
Afterward, it would be hard to say who was actually Tricked that evening: Terry and Draco Malfoy, who shrieked in fright at the two gargoyles bursting in on them, or Anthony and Michael, who had to deal with the eye-scarring image of their best mate kissing a Slytherin. It was a tough call.
"Next time," Anthony snarled, after things had calmed down a bit (and Draco had been forcefully – and loudly – ejected from the premises), "don't you dare sully our bedroom with your disgusting make out sessions."
"I think I'm going to see that every time I close my eyes from now on," Michael moaned.
"Oh, cut it out," Terry said irritably. "You said you didn't have any problem with my being gay."
"Yeah, and I still wouldn't if you'd just choose a decent partner," Anthony replied.
"Well, Draco's my choice, so get used to it," Terry said.
Anthony said he'd try, but everyone in the room knew that he wouldn't. Michael, for his part, quickly stopping caring about where Terry's lips had been once he started having trouble removing his gargoyle face. And that was quite the embarrassing trip to Madam Pomfrey, indeed.
