"And this is the Lantern of Lost Souls," Anthony said, waggling his fingers in front of his face.

It looked ordinary enough, like any other lantern one might find in a castle. True, it was old and dirty, and the glass was cracked in several places, but that didn't mean anything, really. "And just what is the Lantern of Lost Souls?" said Terry, asking what everyone else was thinking.

"I'm glad you asked, Terry," Anthony replied, grinning. His smile looked less irritating and more eerie in the flickering light of said lantern, which sat on the floor in the middle of their little circle. "The Lantern of Lost Souls is a cursed object dating back to the third century, when the evil warlock Malforth forged it in the depths of wizard hell. He used it to capture unsuspecting youth and keep their souls encased in the light for all eternity. It is said that the lantern must be kept ever burning, for when it goes out, the souls will be released back into the world, and they've gone mad from being kept up so long. They'll torment anyone who happens to be sitting nearby." Anthony paused for emphasis, looking from one face to the next around the circle. "Anyone."

Draco laughed cruelly and crossed his arms over his chest. "That story is completely untrue," he said loudly. "Everyone knows there's no such thing as a Lantern of Lost Souls, nor was there ever a warlock named Malforth. You're just trying to frighten me, and it isn't working. Ha." He looked very proud of himself.

Terry nudged Draco gently with an elbow. "It's only meant to be a story, Draco," he said. "We all know it isn't real."

"Yeah, you're ruining the fun of Scary Story Night," said Michael Corner, who was seated across from Draco. "Go on, tell us another one, Anthony."

"All right," said Anthony, slowly, as he stared directly at Draco. "But first. . . ." He leaned forward and placed a hand on the lantern. "We'll find out just how true this story is." He closed his eyes and muttered an incantation, too quietly for the rest of the group to hear. The light within the lantern flickered briefly, then went out, plunging the group into darkness.

A sudden howling noise filled the abandoned classroom where they'd been sitting, and a cold wind whipped around them. "It is the wrath of the Lost Souls!" Anthony's voice cried out in the darkness. "Watch yourself, so they don't suck out your life and pull you into their misery!"

There was a smattering of nervous laughter, followed by a terrified shriek, and a fumbling, rustling noise. The sounds of wind and howling stopped immediately, and the classroom filled again with light. Terry was sprawled out on the floor, with Draco lying on top of him, clinging desperately to Terry's robes and whimpering.

Anthony laughed. "Just a story, right? We're wizards, Malfoy, in case you'd forgotten. I have learned a few wind and sound-creating spells. Quite an effect, wouldn't you say?" On the floor, the lantern lay tipped onto its side, dark and dirty and silent.

"I knew that!" Draco roared, climbing off of Terry, who lay still on the floor beside the lantern with a dazed sort of grin on his face. "You're going to get it, Goldstein. I'm reporting you."

"Ooh, he's reporting me. Whatever shall I do?" Anthony asked mockingly.

"I hate Ravenclaws," Draco snapped, storming from the room, his face red with fury and embarrassment.

"Not all of them, it seems," Anthony quipped, gesturing towards Terry. "He can't get enough out of molesting you, can he?" Terry grinned still wider and did not reply.

"That was a really dirty trick," said Michael, who also looked shaken and scared as he stood against the wall rubbing his arms. However, neither Terry nor Anthony appeared to hear him. Michael Corner had taken a backseat to Draco Malfoy in interest. Michael wasn't sure how he felt about that.
