Amos stuffed the last of his books in his trunk and locked it hastily, tightening his Hufflepuff tie as he stood up and hurried down the stairs, hoping to see Lucius alone one last time before they had to leave.

"What's the rush, Diggory?" Miles Corner was lounging on the sofa, lying on his stomach with his arms hanging over the side. "We've still got half an hour before the carriages pull up."

"I have some last minute things to attend to," Amos said distractedly, running a hand through his hair. He gave Miles a confused look. "Have you finished packing already?"

"Oh, yeah, I did that ages ago." Miles grinned. "Clarke's still in the Great Hall, if she's who you're rushing off to." He waggled his eyebrows.

Amos coughed nervously. "Er. Yes. Well, goodbye then. I'll see you next September, I suppose."

"N.E.W.T. mates for life, Diggory," Miles replied, giving a mock salute.

"Amos, thank Merlin I've found you." Georgiana was red-faced and out of breath. "We've got to gather the first years and make sure they prepare all right."

"We never helped them last year," Amos said, flustered and confused.

"That's because the sixth year Prefects take care of it." Georgiana glared at him, her hands on her hips. "Or do you have somebody else you need?"

Amos closed his eyes briefly and took a deep breath. "All right," he said. "I want to help."

"Well, isn't that a first," Georgiana replied sarcastically. "So much for our being friends, eh, Amos? So much for trying to overcome it."

"You couldn't possibly understand," Amos said, shaking his head. "It's extremely complicated."

"You do realize, I hope, that this is impossible," said Georgiana, taking Amos by the hand. There was something desperate in her eyes. "Think about it, Amos. It just isn't right. It's not normal. Even if it weren't Malfoy."

Amos flinched and yanked his hand from her grasp. "I've left normal quite far behind at this point."

"Stop lying, Lucius." Yaxley sounded desperate; he leaned in close. "I've seen your arm."

"You see nothing," Lucius snapped.

"The rumours are still growing," Yaxley cried, spreading his arms wide. "The darkness is growing larger and more powerful. You're a part of this, whether you like it or not. It's part of you. It's part of all of us."

"Don't speak of what you can't possibly understand," Lucius said disdainfully. "I know what I am part of. You are the ignorant one."

Yaxley glared and stepped away. "I don't want to see you out there," he said darkly. "Unless you take the proper side. You'll see me in a back robe soon enough."

"And what do you know of black robes?" Lucius drawled, rolling his eyes. "Good day, Yaxley."

"Lucius!" Amos reached out and grasped at Malfoy's arm, pulling hard to turn Lucius towards him. "I've been looking for you all day."

Lucius winced loudly and cradled his arm, yanking it away from Amos and giving Diggory an odd look. "We are rather exposed here, aren't we?" They were on the platform, hidden in the midst of hundreds, students eager to return home for the summer.

Amos frowned at him. "Everyone knows who we are at this point, Lucius."

Malfoy raised an eyebrow. "Do they?" He glanced around. "Well, I suppose you are right. Still, I should refrain from a goodbye kiss, I'd think."

Amos smiled. "When will I see you next?"

"Oh, we shall meet again soon enough," Lucius said mysteriously, with a smirk of his own. "I will owl you when the time comes."

Slowly, Amos felt his smile fade, along with his tiny tendrils of happiness. "You're behaving oddly again," he said nervously. "You will see me again, won't you?"

"Of course," said Lucius, placing a hand tenderly on Amos's shoulder. "And don't forget, I do care for you, more deeply than I ever thought possible for one such as I. Please, remember that always, no matter what you may hear of me in the future."

Amos felt his heart sink. "I don't like what you're implying. You will fight the darkness for us, Lucius. You promised. I trust you."

"Do you?" Lucius asked sadly. He turned to watch as the Hogwarts Express pulled in with a whoosh of hot steam. "We shall see, I suppose."

Amos watched as Lucius began to board the train, his stomach clenched into a knot of fear and misgiving. "Just be careful," he called, heedless of those around him. "Think of me."

"Every moment," Lucius replied, before disappearing from sight.

*****

"Amos,

"I deeply apologize for not writing to you sooner. They have been watching me too closely. I miss you terribly. My memories of you keep me sane in dangerous moments. Do not seek me too hard. It is difficult to explain why, but I am far from your reach. I still care for you. Times change, yet my heart is still falling. It will always fall. Don't forget me.

"Lucius."

Amos let the letter drift slowly to the floor. It landed softly upon a newspaper, obscuring the latest headline. "More Muggle Murders: Muddled Ministry Mastered?"

"I am a fool," Amos Diggory said loudly, clenching his fists. "And I shall trust a Malfoy nevermore."

He should have listened to his inner Raven: the young boy who haunted his dreams, sitting helplessly in a desolate forest clearing. The Ravenclaw, crying and whispering in the dark: "Nevermore."
