Amos paced the floor restlessly, wringing his hands. There was just nothing to it; he was going to have to face his emotions. He'd been doing so for the last hour.

It was torment, watching Lucius strut the hallways with Narcissa Black, grinning and laughing and pointedly ignoring Amos. Oh, there were moments, electric flashes of disorienting madness, glances from Malfoy across crowded rooms. But such moments were fleeting. Amos only felt worse after them.

Georgiana Clarke had also grown more confusing and irritating lately, tutting loudly whenever she caught him staring after Lucius. It surprised Amos, actually, that she was the only person who seemed to have realized the situation. But it was still irritating.

Amos startled as the door to the dormitory banged open and Miles Corner flung himself upon his bedspread. "Amos! I was just getting ready to spy on Quidditch practice, mate; wanna come along?" He waggled his eyebrows suggestively. "We might catch the girls in the dressing rooms afterward."

"I think I'll pass," Amos said dryly. "Do be sure to let me know who you see."

"Will do," Miles replied, giving Amos a mock salute before grabbing his camera and flying back out the door.

The shock of the brief encounter flushed Amos with a sense of reality. He was never going to recover from this whirlwind if he kept pacing the floors every night. He had to do something. He just wasn't sure what. He stopped pacing, staring at the slightly open door through which Miles had just left. And then it came to him. Lucius pranced about the castle with Narcissa. Two could play at such a game.

"Don't be ridiculous, Amos," Georgiana snapped, flipping her hair over her shoulder. "I am not going to be your second place."

"I only asked if you would accompany me to the Three Broomsticks," Amos said, feeling dumbfounded. They'd barely left the castle and she was already on to him. Just how well did she know Amos Diggory?

"That is not what you asked," Georgiana said stiffly, though it was, exactly, what he had asked. Aloud, at least, yet apparently she had somehow heard the unspoken addendum. "Will you play a dangerous game with me?"

Amos frowned and looked to his left, where Lucius was once again walking within sight of him with an arm around Narcissa. "It's not what you think," Amos said to Georgiana. It was freezing outside, he was unbelievably frustrated, and his stomach was churning; he decided to abandon reason. "I'm trying to overcome it."

Georgiana stared at him for a long moment, her eyes as stern as ever. "You may sit with me in the tavern," she said finally. "But we are absolutely not in any sort of relationship, save that of friend and fellow Prefect."

Amos smiled at her. "Of course."

"Of course," she mocked, and laughed.

*****

Lucius watched Amos sitting much too closely to that girl, his Prefect. His eyes narrowed, and he tightened his grip on Narcissa in response. So much for the city of light. Well, Amos could try whatever he wished; it didn't bother Lucius Malfoy in the slightest.

Only not.
