Dark air pressed heavily upon Amos’s back like a weight. There was no wind, and the only sound was water, that of the lake gently pressing up against the shore, or perhaps the legendary Giant Squid swimming just under the surface. Amos made his way carefully past the grassy field surrounding the water and stepped cautiously into the Forbidden Forest. He had never done this before, snuck into the forest at night. It certainly wasn’t a proper Prefect activity by any means. Amos was slightly ashamed to be doing it, and not only because he was sure to get detention if he were caught. He also, though he couldn’t rationalize it, felt bad for intruding on Lucius Malfoy’s personal life.

It was ridiculous, when Lucius was so close to him, though really in body more than spirit. Still, their numerous midnight trysts had to mean something, didn’t they? Amos deserved to know where Lucius was going. Besides, if it was dangerous, Amos had a right to put a stop to it. Merely because it was wrong, of course, and not at all because of any desire to protect Lucius. That notion was also ridiculous, and absolutely unfounded. Or so he told himself.

Amos picked his way over fallen tree branches and wandered deeper into the forest, wondering how in the world he was supposed to know where Lucius had gone. He had only overheard Selwyn telling his Quidditch mates that they were all meeting in the forest; Amos had no idea exactly where. And the Forbidden Forest was a very large place, especially at night.

He was about to give up when he saw the light, a dim flickering just ahead. Amos licked his lips nervously and plunged forward, creeping from tree to tree until he could see the source of the light, and the scene surrounding it.

It was a fire, a small one in the center of a clearing. Closest to the flames, a small boy wearing tattered clothing and a Ravenclaw tie sat upon the ground; Amos thought he could hear the boy whimpering. Around him, set further back in a loose circle, were almost a dozen Slytherins, standing with their robes drawn tight. Lucius stood out amongst them, his white-blonde hair gleaming in the light of the fire. Amos swallowed hard and narrowed his eyes; this was not a scene which inspired warm feelings. Something was very wrong.

“Are you tired yet, Mudblood?” Selwyn asked viciously, his voice loud and raspy, echoing in the still night air. “Do you realize, now, what you truly are?”

“He’s scum,” said another, kicking the Ravenclaw’s side, the boy sobbing and whimpering louder. “Not even worthy to be in our presence.”

“Let’s erase him from our presence, then,” Yaxley said wickedly, pointing his wand at the boy.

“Wait,” and Amos’s stomach dropped at the voice of Lucius Malfoy, as calm and silky as ever. “We need to do this right, if we are truly to prove ourselves. We need to show Him that we are properly ready for the war. We can’t just murder the Mudbloods.” A low murmur around the circle seemed to disagree. “Not yet, at least,” Lucius amended, and Amos could hear the smirk in his voice. “Not until He has set us free.”

“What then, Lucius?” Yaxley asked impatiently. He had not lowered his wand. “We’ve been practicing our dark rituals for months now. What for, if not to show dirt such as this their proper place?”

“We have merely been learning how to fight in the ranks of our Lord,” Lucius replied firmly. “It would not do to take any unnecessary risks without being ordered. We are in training as soldiers; we are meant only to obey our leader.”

“Well, I’m not leaving without having a bit of fun,” said Selwyn, poking the Ravenclaw with his wand. A bright white spark exploded from the tip of the wand, and the young boy cried and writhed in pain.

Amos watched in horror, completely lost as to what he ought to do. This was beyond wrong in every sense, and he had to put a stop to it. But he was not nearly strong enough to best a dozen Slytherins; he would never be able to overpower them. And to see Lucius there in the circle, speaking of war and Mudbloods, was quite simply devastating. It broke Amos’s heart.

He should have known. Lucius was an arrogant Slytherin; he was friends with seriously dangerous individuals. It only made sense that he would agree with them, in their politics, their hatred of Muggleborns. Somehow Amos had thought Lucius might be above it all, smarter than these debased fools with their love of violence and dark magic. After all, Lucius cared about Amos, didn’t he? And Amos would never condone such horrific acts. But now he felt he was finally seeing who Lucius really was; he had found the window in the wall, the secret passage into the depths of Malfoy’s true heart. It was terrifying, and he had to do something. He wanted to do something, desperately, but he was so overwhelmed that he could not think of a single thing.
