Lucius Malfoy was staring at him again. Amos hunched his shoulders and tried to focus on his food, on the conversation of his fellow Hufflepuffs, but those eyes were still there, gleaming, staring. Nothing tasted like anything, each bite a torment, every mouthful going down like lead. Lucius was staring at him.

"And then I think we should split up, we'll cover more ground quicker that way." Georgiana Clarke, his Prefect partner, was talking in his ear, discussing patrolling once again, as though she never had anything else to talk about. "Do you agree?"

"Is it Potions next?" Amos asked instead of answering, glancing over at her. He was distracted by the eyes, even when he couldn't see them. Georgiana was background noise, merely a distraction. She wasn't working very well.

She faltered, uncertain, and then shook her head. "Charms first."

"Ah," said Amos, shoving another tasteless mass of food into his mouth. He wasn't even sure what he was eating.

Lucius came out the door as Amos approached, and his eyes lit up at the sight of the Hufflepuff. "My favorite fifth year," he said, grinning, and he almost sounded sincere. "How was Charms, Diggory?"

"I thought we weren't speaking to one another," Amos said through clenched teeth, clenched hands, clenched heart. "I much preferred it that way."

Lucius laughed. "And where would I get my amusement then?" He touched Amos then, briefly, a tap under the chin with those pale, slender fingers. "There's hardly a Slytherin as fascinating as you." His smile twitched, as though he might laugh again, but he didn't.

Amos swallowed and glowered at him. "Don't tease me, Malfoy. I'm going to be late for Potions, and I don't have time for your idiotic games, whatever they may be."

Lucius just smiled enigmatically. "Very well." He walked off, casually brushing against Amos's shoulder as he went. Amos jerked away and furiously rubbed his arm, glaring at Malfoy's back as it moved gracefully down the corridor. He was filled with rage, frustration, and something else he dared not name. He was angry, mostly, with himself, for this third thing.

He couldn't possibly focus on class after this, and Professor Slughorn was very disappointed in his potion that day. "Not at all up to your usual standard, my boy," he said, shaking his head over the steaming pool of misery that was Amos's cauldron. "Not feeling well today?"

Amos sighed and shook his head, clearing away the most recent reminder of his frustration with a wave of his wand. The problem was that he was feeling at all.

*****

Lucius Malfoy was staring at him again, and Amos wanted to stand up in the middle of the Great Hall and scream. "What is wrong with you, Malfoy?" He couldn't, because he was terrified of the answer, and so he simply looked away.

Lucius was staring, and his Slytherin friends laughed and talked loudly around him, having quite the wrong idea entirely as to why Malfoy stared at the Hufflepuff. Narcissa Black, a lovely young blonde girl, smiled up at Malfoy and touched his arm. "You haven't touched your dinner, Lucius," she said carefully, hoping she would be rewarded for noticing.

Lucius waved his hand dismissively. "I'm not hungry," he replied without looking at her. It was supposed to be just a game, a devious diversion without feeling. And yet, somehow, food just didn't taste as good when Amos wasn't looking at him.
