Title: Chocolate Frog Time
Pairing: Hermione/Katie
Prompt: that's what almost happened
Rating: PG
Word Count: 1228
Summary: “Yeah, she’s sweet like that,” Ginny conceded with a nod, not telling Hermione she thought even the sweetest person would have been put off by stalker tendencies. That is, if the person weren’t interested herself.
Author's Notes: I giggled quite a bit while writing this one. Hopefully you will too, despite the fact that's it a bit longer than intended.

“Let me see if I understand you,” Ginny said slowly. “Why were you walking, exactly?”
Hermione shrugged, keeping her eyes on the fire. Ginny was grateful the Common Room was empty. She knew that, had it been otherwise, Hermione would have used other people to escape the situation.
“It’s frigid out,” the red-head said. “You really were just...out for no reason?”
“I like walks,” Hermione said. “They help me clear my head.”
Ginny nodded, though her face made it clear she knew Hermione was lying. She glanced down at the Chocolate Frog she was beginning to unwrap and said, “All right. So you went for a walk to clear your head.” She paused, her bangs half-hiding her rolling eyes from Hermione. “And you stumbled across the Quidditch pitch.”
“Well…,” Hermione began, and Ginny raised her eyes back up towards her face, Chocolate Frog hovering inches from her mouth. “Not really stumbled, exactly.”
Ginny blinked, confused. “Why would you ever go near the pitch if a match isn’t…” It dawned on her and she grew startled. “Did you know she’d be there?”
Hermione’s silence was all the response Ginny needed. The younger girl leaped up from her armchair, threw her Frog down on the table across from them, and sat very close beside Hermione on the couch.
“You never told me you fancied girls,” Ginny hissed, narrowing her eyes.
“I don’t know,” Hermione hissed back, then looked around as though reminding herself they were alone. When she continued, her voice was a normal volume. “I mean, I’m...not sure. If it’s girls or just her, I mean. Ginny,” Hermione’s eyes pleaded with her friend not to be cross. “You know you would have been the first I told if I’d known for sure.”
Ginny eyed Hermione for a moment, then nodded slowly. “Yeah,” she said, and sighed. “Yeah, you would have. But why go see her at the pitch? There wasn’t even practice yesterday.”
Hermione shrugged, staring down at her hands as she said, “She practices on her own sometimes and I...like seeing her fly. I know when she goes alone--”
“Stalker.”
“--and sometimes I go to watch.”
“Stalker. Does she know you’re there?”
“Well--”
“Stalker!”
“Would you stop?” Hermione snapped, and Ginny rolled her eyes again, this time not bothering to hide it. “She...she used to not know. But she saw me one day.”
“Ooooh.” Ginny winced. “That’s embarrassing.”
“It was,” Hermione replied, cringing. “But she was quite kind about it. Struck up a conversation with me and everything.”
“Yeah, she’s sweet like that,” Ginny conceded with a nod, not telling Hermione she thought even the sweetest person would have been put off by stalker tendencies. That is, if the person weren’t interested herself.
“Yes,” Hermione said hesitantly, as if she were unsure of Katie’s motives as well.
A beat passed. Ginny broke off a piece of her Frog and held it out towards her. She declined.
“So then what?” Ginny asked, popping the piece into her own mouth.
“There were a few more times I just watched,” Hermione said. “She didn’t mind...I think she enjoyed it, actually. Then she asked me to help. She had me hit bludgers at her--”
“You?” Ginny snickered. “Did she have a death wish?”
Stung, the older girl said nothing. Ginny, realizing Hermione was offended, grew sympathetic.
“I’m sorry,” she said, touching her shoulder. Hermione looked away. “Hey--hey, I’m sorry, okay? Go on. She had you hitting bludgers…”
“Just so she could practice dodging,” Hermione said, not yet dropping it. “I wasn’t that bad either, thank you.”
Ginny smiled. “I’m sure you were brilliant. So then what? She snogged you?”
Hermione’s hesitation made Ginny nearly choke on a glob of half-melted chocolate resting on the back of her tongue.
“Well,” the brunette said finally. “That’s what almost happened. We always walk back to the castle together but this time…” Hermione sighed and sat back. “Something was different. It wasn’t about touching or kissing or anything. I don’t even think we were saying anything to each other. It was just a...a sort of feeling.”
“And did she feel this mysterious gay feeling too or…?”
“I think so,” Hermione said, letting Ginny’s snarkiness slide. “It was just different. She kissed me. On the cheek,” she added hastily, subduing Ginny’s astonishment. “But she’s never done that before. And it wasn’t a friendly peck goodbye. I’m sure.”
Ginny had never had a conversation like this with Hermione before. Usually their situations were reversed--she was telling Hermione about something mundane Harry had done that had caused her to ponder nothing other than the one tiny action, and Hermione would always be very logical about it, telling her to calm down. The younger girl was grateful for a change of pace, and rose to the occasion.
“Now, Hermione,” she said evenly, just as Hermione would always say to her. “Let’s not be rash. You don’t know what that means. Maybe it’s--”
At that very moment, Angelina and Alicia entered rowdily through the portrait hole, followed by a subdued Katie.
“So that’s all?” Angelina was saying. “You only kissed her on the--”
Alicia was the first to see Ginny and Hermione, and silenced Angelina with a not-so-subtle whack to the stomach.
“What did you want me to do?” Katie demanded, having not yet turned her head enough to notice she and her two friends were no longer alone. “It almost happened, but I didn’t--”
“Hello you two!” Alicia said brightly, Angelina seeming too winded to do anything other than nod enthusiastically. “Having Chocolate Frog time, are we?”
Ginny and Hermione, having never been addressed directly by either Alicia or Angelina, stared for a moment. Ginny seemed to catch on quicker, and began nodding very enthusiastically herself.
“Lovely!” Angelina said too loudly. “Well, we wouldn’t want to interrupt. Katie, come up to our room will you?”
But Katie’s eyes were locked on Hermione’s and the skin of her face was turning the same shade as Ginny’s hair. Hermione’s expression, Ginny noted, seemed to mirror her own each time she thought Harry wasn’t looking.
“Hi,” Katie said, sounding like she was sighing the word out.
“Hi,” Hermione replied, awed.
“Err, you know,” Ginny said, an idea forming in her mind. “Hermione was just telling me how she was...uh, thinking of trying out for Quidditch next year. As a Beater, an alternate in case Fred or George get hurt.”
“She is?” Angelina said.
“Splendid idea!” Alicia said, hitting Angelina in the stomach again. “Katie, why don’t you and Hermione keep practicing together? Two birds with one stone and all that!”
“But I’m not--” Hermione began, and Ginny took the opportunity to jam a piece of Frog into her a mouth to shut her up.
Katie, a gleam of hope appearing in her eyes, nodded. “That sounds good. Same time tomorrow then?”
Hermione, who was trying desperately not to choke on the chocolate, could not answer.
“She’ll be there,” Ginny said, smiling.
Angelina and Alicia gave Katie no chance to respond. Shouting haughty goodbyes, they dragged her up the stairs and slammed the door behind them. Hermione stared at Ginny with round eyes, wiping her mouth.
Ginny finished the last bite of her Chocolate Frog and said, “I expect a full update. And this time, don’t let anything almost happen.”
