George stood awkwardly in the hall. An obvious Muggle had just passed on his way up the stairs, staring openly at George's magenta shop robes, making the redhead realize that he probably shouldn't have come straight from work. Clearing his throat, George ruffled his hair a bit and knocked gently upon the door.
A pair of light blue eyes stared at him from the crack. "Um, hello. Can I help you?"
George rolled his eyes good-naturedly. "C'mon, Katie, you act like I'm some kind of creep. May I come in for a moment, please?"
Katie shook her head. "Angelina's not here."
"Well, maybe I'm not here for bloody Angelina," George said, frustrated, leaning against the door frame.
"What could you possibly want with me?" Katie asked, growing braver and opening the door wider. "I'm not the one you propositioned." She glared at him.
George sighed. "I only came over to apologize," he said heavily. "I was completely out of order last night and I feel like an idiot. Please, is Angelina here? I want to tell her in person."
"I'll make sure she gets the message," Katie said coldly, beginning to shut the door.
"Wait!" George threw his hand out and stopped her, pushing against the entrance to her flat. "I want us to be friends again. These are changing times; we need to stay close to the ones we love."
"You ought to have thought of that before you told Angie she'd be better off without me," said Katie, her voice trembling with a combination of fear and anger. "She won't even tell me what you said; I can only imagine it wasn't very pleasant. All I know is you stepped over the line, and I am not going to lose her to an idealist."
"I know," said George. He sighed heavily, touching the side of his face. "I wasn't thinking clearly. All I can think about is Fred lately. You can understand, can't you?"
Katie stared at him. "She was never Fred's, either," she said softly. "She's mine, and I plan on keeping her."
George frowned slightly and nodded. "I know. I'm sorry."
He stood in the hall long after she'd shut the door, staring at the wood paneling. He would have done anything, gone anywhere; he knew now that Katie Bell would, too.
