Title: Glass Moon
Character Pairing: Bill Weasley/Nymphadora Tonks
Rating: PG
Summary: “Bill’s gift made it seem like she was taking a piece of the moon with her.”
Author’s Notes: Thank you so much to my beta, [C]! You really came through for me sweetie. I hope this is what you wanted [livejournal.com profile] captainpookey! This was my first time writing this pairing, and it was a lot of fun, but I fear that I will always fail at writing comedy. *grins*

The sun was moments away from setting, its deep amber glow disappearing behind the mountains in the distance. The chill in the air grew sharp and biting without the warmth of the sun, but Tonks barely noticed.

“You can’t catch me, slowpoke!” she yelled over her shoulder as she ran. She was breathless from the chase, but she didn’t dare stop, knowing that he would reach her if she did.

“I’ll have you yet!” Bill shouted from somewhere close behind. His deep voice sounded just as breathless, but Tonks could tell that he was catching up.

She smiled and ran faster, heading towards a cluster of trees near the lake. The light from the sun had vanished completely and the pearly glow of the full moon lit up the school grounds.

“No hiding in the trees!” she heard him yell and she let out a breathless laugh.

“Then you’ll have to catch me!” she shouted.

Moonlight shone off of the Black Lake, making the water sparkle, and the trees up ahead swayed gently in the calm fall breeze.

He was very close now, but she knew that if she reached the trees that she’d be able to hide long enough to dodge him.

She laughed again. “Ha! You’ll never catch me!” she teased. “You’ll never… UMPH!”

She went flying, having tripped over an exposed tree root that she hadn’t seen in the dark. Landing flat on her face and cursing her clumsiness, she groaned from pain and then from embarrassment as she heard his laughter.

She sat up, wincing slightly, and glared over her shoulder at him. His hands were in the pockets of his long, leather coat as he stood laughing, looking as charming as ever.

“Merlin, that was amazing! You flew better just then than you ever have on a broom!” he laughed.

Tonks growled and rubbed her throbbing ankle. “You wouldn’t be laughing if it was you who’d just busted your bum.”

That made him laugh harder as he walked over to where she had fallen. He offered her his hand to help her stand, but she didn’t take it and sat glaring up into his handsome, grinning face.

“Come now, don’t be a bad sport. You were winning before your, ah… little spill.” He winked and she smiled in spite of herself.

She was still rubbing her ankle, unaware of it now, but Bill frowned as he took notice.

“Are you ok?” he asked, voice rough from all of the running and laughing, but soft in his concern.

“I’m fine,” she said while grinning at him, no longer embarrassed. “Here,” she patted a place on the ground next to her, “Let’s just sit here. It’s nice by the lake.”

Bill sat and breathed deep, still looking a bit winded from all the exercise. His red hair was a lovely, deep crimson in the moonlight and hung in a charming mess around his thin face. Her own hair was a glossy shade of black today, falling in a tumble of messy curls to her shoulders. She missed her spiky, violet hair, but she needed a change for a while.

“Nice out, eh?” Bill said, looking relaxed as he stared out at the lake in front of them. “I’m glad we decided to come out here. Hope we don’t get caught though.”

Tonks smiled and wrapped her arms around her knees. “Oh yes, wouldn’t want to hurt your chances of being Head Boy next year. And don’t worry, we won’t get caught. I sneak around all the time, remember?”

“How could I forget, my mischievous little changeling?”

He turned his head to smirk at her, just as she did the same. They stared at each other for a moment before they turned their attention back to the scenery.

“I love the full moon,” he said. “It’s calming.”

“You’re a werewolf at heart,” Tonks joked.

Bill chuckled and nudged her gently on her side with his elbow. It was a friendly gesture he usually made when one of his mates teased him, one that Tonks had gotten used to since they’d become close friends almost a year ago.

“I love the full moon too,” she admitted. “For something so big and far away it looks so… fragile. Like it could shatter if you threw a stone at it.”

“You’d know all about shattering things, my clumsy little Hufflepuff.”

They both laughed, even as she smacked him on the arm.

“You want it?” Bill asked casually once they had quieted.

“What? The moon?” she asked, amused. “Sure, why not?” She sounded sarcastic. Bill just grinned at her.

“Alright then.”

Tonks watched as he felt around the ground for a second and raised her eyebrows when he plucked up a small rock. He pulled out his wand from a pocket of his coat and touched the tip of it to the stone.

He muttered a spell she’d never heard before, though it was usually like that with them. He was a sixth year after all and she was a fourth year, so he naturally knew more advanced spells; spells he sometimes taught her when they were bored.

She watched the ordinary rock morph into a smooth, shining circle. Its color became a slivery pearl and it emitted a gentle glow just like the moon in the sky.

She gasped in surprise, impressed with his skill and with the beauty of the transfigured rock.

He grinned and tossed it to her, and she took care not to drop it since it looked so fragile and felt so light.

“Careful, it’s made of glass. I’m betting it shatters in a week, knowing you.”

Tonks held the small glowing orb up to her face. “I’ll keep it forever and take good care of it, you’ll see. It can be my good luck charm. I might never be clumsy again thanks to this.”

“Unlikely,” he said, though he looked pleased that she liked it.

She was still examining her little moon when she felt his hand brush the side of her face. He was tucking a loose curl behind her ear, but the touch was so gentle and casual that it took her by surprise.

He never usually touched her like that, and yet it felt so… natural.

She smiled even as she blushed.

“Thanks,” she said softly. “For the moon, I mean.”

He laughed. “Sure.”

He smiled fondly at her and the intensity of his stare made her look away.

“We should head back soon.” He said after a moment. “It’s a bit late already.”

“Aye, we should,” she said, clutching her new prize gently in her hand.

Neither of them moved and although they remained quiet it was a comfortable silence, and it remained so even as they made their way back to the castle some time later.

Tonks was sad to go, already missing the beautiful view of the lake sparkling in the moonlight, but Bill’s gift made it seem like she was taking a piece of the moon with her.

As they walked they laughed and joked again as usual, their hands brushing occasionally due to their closeness.

Every time they touched they would glance at each other, both smiling, Bill with his charming little grin and Tonks with her mischievous smirk, before they fell back into easy conversation.

The small, glowing moon stayed in her hand the whole time, even as she fell asleep later that night, warm and content in her bed.

She kept it with her always from then on.

Never once did it break.

Bill was the one who found her body, in the hour that Voldemort had ordered his forces to retreat.

She laid there on the ground, unmoving, her heart-shaped face pale and peaceful. His body sagged with shock and grief as he realized that she had died in the place where they had sat, all those years ago, staring out at the moonlit lake that was now surrounded with bodies and thick clouds of smoke.

He sank down next to her and caught hold of her small, pale hand that was already turning cold.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered, trying to ignore the way the tears tickled his cheeks as they slid down from his eyes.

He loved Fleur with all of his heart, and he knew that Tonks had loved Remus, but there was always something between them, something special and comfortable and safe, but she was gone now. His clumsy little changeling, a wife, a newly made mother… his first love.

He smiled even as he cried.

It was a few moments before he saw it, and when he did his heart broke all over again.

The little glass moon was lying half way out of her robe pocket, emitting the same soft, silvery glow as it had when he’d first transfigured it.

She’d never broken it.

He tucked it back into her pocket before he gently lifted her off the ground.

He couldn’t keep it; it was hers and it always would be, and when they buried her, in a grave next to Remus’, it was buried with her. Forever glowing and unbroken.

He knew that was what she would have wanted.
