Title: Belonging
Character Pairing: Katie/Angelina
Prompt: pygmy
Rating: G
Word Count: 824
Summary: It had always been that way, Angelina and Alicia together, always touching somehow.
Author's Notes: I guess it might be a bit angsty. Takes place during OotP. I hope this fits the prompt properly; dictionary.com's fourth definition for pygmy is " a person who is of small importance, or who has some quality, attribute, etc., in very small measure."

Ron Weasley was always the first to leave Quidditch practice. Sometimes Katie felt like joining him, the two of them trudging up the hill with the same slumped shoulders of defeat. It was better than watching Angelina put away the equipment and having to see that hard look in her eyes. Things had changed since the twins had been banned, that was for sure.
"At least Ginny's not bad," said Alicia hopefully, as the three Chasers made their way back to the castle.
"She's no Harry," Angelina said darkly. Katie nodded, saddened not as much by the remark as by the tone in which it had been said. She longed to touch Angelina, reassure her somehow through the electric contact of skin on skin, but Alicia was there first, squeezing Angelina's arm with a knowing smile on her face, and Katie felt sick.
It had always been that way, Angelina and Alicia together, always touching somehow. Holding hands, brushing shoulders, playful nudges. Somehow it had never really bothered Katie before, but things had been changing so much lately that now the simplest nothing could make Katie want to rush to the lavatory and throw her heart up. Sometimes Katie saw the two of them whispering to one another, and she felt she would give up anything just to hear what they said.
Angelina sighed heavily and threw an arm around Alicia's shoulders, drawing the other girl closer as they walked together, their steps in tandem. Katie felt stupid and confused, mouth moving soundlessly as she fell behind, longing to be in that hug and feeling utterly unwanted.

"Honestly, if it weren't for Quidditch, they wouldn't even know I existed," Katie said angrily, slamming her book shut and startling Leanne, who spilled ink onto the table.
"What is it with you lately?" Leanne asked peevishly, snatching up her parchment to avoid the ink and staring hard at Katie.
Katie huffed and said nothing, turning her back on the couch by the fire, where Angelina and Alicia sat much too close to one another.

"Katie, I'd like to talk to you," said Angelina, her voice casual as she brushed past the blonde, landing gracefully upon the Quidditch pitch.
Katie's stomach clenched and she scowled, placing a palm upon her abdomen and wishing, not for the first time, that she could obliviate these painful feelings out of her head. Head bowed, she marched into the changing rooms and pulled her robes on quickly, praying that this wasn't about the staring.
Alicia was hanging around by the entrance, watching the girls with a puzzled expression on her face. "Go on ahead, Al, I'll be up in a moment," said Angelina, waving her friend away. Alicia left reluctantly, eyes lowered.
"Is it the catch I missed?" Katie asked quickly, trying her best to hide her shaking hands. "I'm really sorry; I thought for sure he was throwing to Ron next—"
"Katie." Angelina's voice was sharp, and Katie looked up with a frightened little gasp. "You've been distracted lately," said Angelina sternly. "You're a brilliant Chaser, Katie, and I can't afford to lose you right now." She placed a hand on her forehead in frustration. "We have enough problems."
Katie frowned. "I'm trying my best," she said. "I just, I don't really feel like part of the team anymore."
"What?" Angelina seemed confused; lowering her hand, she fixed Katie with a penetrating stare.
"You and Alicia," said Katie. Her face flushed in embarrassment; she was feeling stupid again. "You're always huddled together, talking. I feel left out sometimes." It was awfully close to words she had vowed never to speak, and she was taken aback by her own honesty.
Angelina slowly frowned, as the captain seemingly tried to search for words. Katie bit her lower lip and looked away, half-wishing she could just Disapparate away. Finally, Angelina placed her hands upon Katie's shoulders, startling the blonde. She hadn't been so close to Angelina in quite a while; their eyes met and Katie's insides froze.
"You are incredibly important," Angelina said slowly. "I'm sorry I made you feel otherwise." She paused, briefly licked her lips (Katie gulped), and sighed. "I've been having a rough year," she said, stepping back. Katie missed the feel of her touch immediately. "I just – Al's been my best friend since first year. But, you, you're an important part of the team. You're important to me, too." For the first time Katie could ever remember, Angelina looked awkward. "I care about you just as much as I do Alicia."
"Well. Er, thanks?" Katie shuffled her feet, uncertain and scared.
Angelina laughed and pulled Katie into a hug, and somehow the tension and frustration just melted away like rain water, leaving Katie feeling safe and normal again, back where she properly belonged. "Quit falling apart on me," Angelina said merrily. "I need you."
Katie decided it was safer not to ask for clarification on that last remark.
