“Don’t say a word.”
“Wasn’t going to.”
She studied his face for a moment, just to be sure. He wasn’t smiling. Wasn’t giggling. He had a polite crinkle to his eyes that was neither here nor there. He was very good at doing that-- being neither here nor there.
He hadn’t bothered to look up from his parchment once yet. His quill scratched on, his shoulders hunched over his essay. He did not join the class in cries of “Peeves catch you off guard, Evans?” or “Who’s the bugger that’s going to suffer for that tomorrow?”
He didn’t comment on the dark fingerprints she left all over the top of their table and her chair and his books. He didn’t seem to take note of the oily black ink that soaked through the ends of her hair or the fibers of her robe. He didn’t care to admonish her as she flicked speckles of ink into his hair and onto his shirt as she rifled through her book bag.
In fact, he didn’t even seem to notice that there was anything remotely off about her today.
She couldn’t decide whether or not she was greatful for his silence, or irked by it. Was he too wrapped up in his stupid words to notice? Or was he just being polite? He was very good at doing that-- confusing her. Regardless, she twirled her quill between her fingers, starting in on her own essay.
What Lily didn’t know, however, was that he noticed everything.
He noticed the way her lips puckered and her eye twitched when she was frustrated. He noticed the way that she cocked her hips to the side in protest whenever she spoke to James. He especially noticed the way her cheeks flushed to almost the same shade as her hair when she was flustered, and he always noticed this because it made her green eyes stand out that much more.
He was so busy noticing, in fact, that when Professor Flitwick announced that time was up, he had completely forgotten to write his conclusion.
