Ficlet: Dear Catastrophe Waitress (Neville/Cho)

Title: Dear Catastrophe Waitress
Pairing: Neville/Cho
Prompt: A Veritable Treasure Trove
Rating: PG
Word Count: 928
Summary: Neville finds a wealth of advice in his Ravenclaw friends. Very little of it is helpful though.
Author's Notes: This story takes place during Harry and Cho’s infamous Hogsmeade date. I tried to have Neville meeting people outside of his own house at a variety of places so as to give one an idea of what some of the Hogwart’s students might do at Hogsmeade. Constructive criticism and/or character analysis is loved. Thanks to Sarah for her help with the beta! One final note, the title was taken from the Belle and Sebastian album.

The Three Broomsticks

"Of course Harry's had it for Cho. Most boys do," Mandy explained in what she‘d come to think of as her announcer tone. It sounded to her as if it were chock full of advice and hard facts. To Neville it sounded like Mandy was doing her best Roger Davies impersonation. "Laugh hard,” she commanded quickly.

Neville did his best imitation of a laugh, but came out sounding more like a walrus than someone who'd heard anything funny. Mandy didn't seem to notice though, as she was doing her very best to look as if she didn’t know that Michael Corner was sitting directly to the left of them.

"Any reaction?" Neville asked more out of politeness than actual curiosity.

"He looked at me. I believe he's thinking to himself, 'Hmm that Brocklehurst girl seems interesting, why don't I have a butterbeer with her? Oh, too bad, she's got someone. Maybe next Hogsmeade?' What do you think, Nev ?"

Nev glanced at Michael Corner and saw the boy was staring blankly out the window. "Why don't you buy him a butterbeer?"

Mandy seemed to ponder the idea and then smiled. "I think you're right, Nev. Now, if you'll excuse me?"

"Sure," Neville said as he got up to leave. He hoped some of the other Ravenclaws might have better advice.

Schrivenshafts

"She's liked him for a while I believe," Su said as she scrutinized three different quills.

"Most girls do," Lisa added with a far away look that Neville had begun to recognize as the beginnings of Harry Potter worship.

Su rolled her eyes. "It's not as if he's any great prize, though. He hangs about the Weasleys and does the most immature things imaginable. Plus, he's not particularly bright if you ask me."

"You did say he has beautiful eyes, though," Lisa chimed in mischievously as she picked up a scroll and took it to the cash register.

"I never said that," Su retorted as she placed two of the quills down and followed Lisa to the register with her choice firmly in hand. "I said he has captivating eyes."

"Erm thanks," Neville said. 'Perhaps another boy's point of view on the situation might help,' he thought.

Honeydukes

"It's simple mate. The girls of this school want a hero," Terry said as he picked at the different pieces of candy hanging in the aisle way and decorating the long shelves.

"Oh," Neville moaned. If it was security and heroics that Cho was looking for, then Harry was most definitely the best candidate.

"I'm not saying the girls at Hogwart's are just going after Harry because he is the savior of the wizarding world, but it is a part of it. They want to feel protected and who better to do that than Harry Potter? Plus, he's got those eyes. All of the girls go on and on about how green his eyes are and…it's really disturbing actually," Terry lamented as he threw a few sugar quills in his bag. Chocolate sugar quills no less.

Neville seemed to vaguely remember those were Mandy’s favorites. “I thought you didn’t eat sugar quills.”

“Hmm? Oh, thought I’d give it another go. You know us Ravenclaws, we have to test things at least one hundred times before we come to a final conclusion,” Terry joked lamely.

Outside the Hog's Head Inn

"Harry's just so…soo…just…He just sat there while I tried to talk to him and then ended the date with, 'Oh, I have to go meet Hermione,'" Cho spat out disgustedly.

Neville walked quietly beside her as the two of them left the first official meeting of the DA. He nodded his head as she spoke, having learned long ago that Cho never really needed advice, just a sounding board. Fortunately, he had practice at being such a sounding board when listening to Lavender and Parvati bemoan their latest crush's "infidelities".

"If he had to go be with her so badly, why did he even ask me here? Am I being too hard on him, Neville?" She asked, turning on him so suddenly that he nearly fell into her.

"He told me this morning that he had to set up the meeting with Hermione, but he could have, um, sat with you a bit longer and tried to talk to you," Neville admitted.

"You're right," Cho said, her shoulders slumping as the anger steadily left her. "You're right, but it was our first date. Is it a crime to hope for one's first date to be something special or, at the very least, without interruption?"

"I'm not sure," Neville blushed. "I've never actually been on one."

"Oh, I'm sorry Neville. I didn't mean to-"

"It's alright," Neville interrupted, hoping to break the awkward tension.

"It's just, here I am sitting here complaining about my problems with Harry and with… and I haven't even asked how you're doing, have I? I mean, are there any girls you're interested in?" Cho asked with an imploring look.

"No," Neville answered, without quite meeting her eyes. Even without looking her in the eye he was sure she knew something was up from the inquisitive look on her face.

"Alright, well if you ever want to talk about it Neville let me know. You're a good catch and I think I should have some say as to who gets you, don't you think?" Cho asked in one of her rare moments of humor.

Neville smiled a little at that. “If I'm such a good catch then why don't you catch me?”

Oh, Ravenclaws. So brilliantly clueless.

Loved it! And I haven't read Neville/Cho before, but it was nicely realistic and interesting.

"I'm not sure," Neville blushed. "I've never actually been on one."

Aww, poor Neville - he's so cute. :D

I love the different perspectives you give, very entertaining and also insightful. :)

Neville/Cho is a rare pairing, and I like how you've been developing their relationship with each other. Starting from almost a sibling-like closeness, and inching it forward. I always like stories that take their time to establish the build-up. Good work.

Awwww....I love that last line! I'm partial to Neville/Ginny (although truthfully? I'll ship Neville with just about anyone), but this ficlet does a good job of showing how Neville/Cho could work.

Great, sweet story. There's never enough Neville/Cho

Sounds great. I'll post my Neville/Cho story after I finish uploading my current story (it's on chapter 4 of 6)

I've been meaning to review your rare pairs stories for ages now, particularly since I really liked how you wrote Michael Corner for my Christmas exchange story. As you probably guessed, I do love Ravenclaw pieces. A lot!

This is really lovely. I'm a sucker for normal scenes of teenage life and dialogue, and particularly when it's written well. I like this beginning to Neville and Cho's relationship. Starts out friendly/semi-sibling like, and Neville going around to various Eagles and asking for their input about Cho is really awesome.

Very nice work here!
