leontinabowie. It was a pleasure writing this pairing for you. Many thanks go to
gelsey for being such an amazing beta and coming up with a title for me.
The snow crunched softly under Regulus' feet as he made his way across the Hogwarts grounds. It was late, and he should be doing his prefect rounds, but he had other places to be. The crescent moon was high in the sky, shedding little light on the cold winter evening. A thick snow fell, covering his tracks, which eased his mind. It would be an unimaginable disaster if he was discovered.
He approached the Whomping Willow but stayed at a safe distance. Regulus then pulled out his wand from his robes and used it to make a large stick hit the secret notch in the tree, making it immobile. He cast a weary look around himself before slipping inside the small hidden entrance.
As he headed down the passage way that would lead him to the Shrieking Shack, Regulus couldn't help but dwell on the fact that he should not be trusted with the information about this secret entrance into Hogwarts. It astounded him that he had been, but then again, Gryffindors were always far too trusting, especially Lupin. It didn't matter to Lupin that Regulus was a Slytherin and had some questionable friends or even that there was a war going on. Lupin insisted that he trusted him.
Regulus had no intention of betraying that trust, but outside the safety of Hogwarts, where the war was getting more and more intense, it was beginning to be dangerous to trust anyone. Regulus held very little trust for Lupin himself, especially because of what he was.
It hadn't been difficult to for Regulus to figure out that Lupin was a werewolf. Anyone with keen observation skills and a basic knowledge of dark creatures could figure it out. Two years ago when this fling had started with a few secret snogs during prefect rounds, Regulus began to pay more attention to Lupin. It wasn't long before his suspicions were proven to be correct.
He should have ended things then. Their secret relationship was doomed from the beginning, and that had been a perfect excuse for Regulus to back out. And yet, for reasons he couldn't quite explain, Regulus kept his new-found information to himself and continued to meet with Lupin in secret. Not even Lupin knew he knew.
In any case, Regulus was sure it had ended when Lupin graduated and went off to fight in the war. Regulus hadn't heard from him all throughout his 6th year, and their heavy snogging sessions had become a pleasant memory. Now a 7th year, Regulus didn't except to hear from Lupin ever again and it came as a shock when a letter arrived last week with the morning owl post.
In the letter, Lupin expressed his desire to meet with him and said he knew of a place that they could do so privately and safely. Lupin then went on to explain about the hidden entrance between Hogsmeade and Hogwarts and how to get in. The letter ended with Lupin's initials RJL and told him to burn the parchment.
Regulus did burn the parchment, but for the remainder of the week he contemplated whether or not to to to the meeting. He and Lupin had never really met in secret. Their snogging sessions were usually held in empty corridors and the occasional broom closet. The full moon wasn't near, but even so Regulus was apprehensive. Lupin was on the other side of the war, after all. It hadn't been that long ago when Regulus had received his Dark Mark. He knew his brother had found out, which gave him reason to believe that Lupin would know. After all, they were good mates.
So why would Lupin want to meet?
Eventually Regulus' curiosity of the situation got the better of him, and his apprehensiveness wasn't enough to make him turn around now. Still, he kept his wand at the ready.
He made it to the end of the corridor and into the Shrieking Shack before he saw Lupin waiting. The man looked worn out, and Regulus spotted a few new scars on his chin and neck. He wondered if they had been self-inflicted or if Lupin was just spending more time with werewolves these days.
Lupin stood and gave a soft smile when he saw Regulus enter the room. “Hey,” he said simply.
Regulus did not move closer and continued to keep a firm grip on his wand, noting that he could see that both of Lupin's hands were empty of any weapons. “Lupin.”
Regulus watched as Lupin watched him. He saw the man frown slightly at Regulus' demeanor. Lupin had apparently forgotten that there was a war outside these walls and they were on different sides. He was an idiot if he had expected Regulus to welcome him with a smile and a kiss.
“I'm not here to hurt you,” Lupin stated.
“Then why are you here?”
Lupin shrugged and sat back down in the dusty arm chair he had been sitting in when Regulus arrived. “I'm not quite sure. I've been thinking about you lately. About us.”
“There is no us, Lupin,” Regulus cut in.
“I know that.” Lupin sighed. “But there was something once. Recently I can't seem to get it out of my head. I just keep dwelling on it.”
“So dwell on it,” Regulus replied, not at all sure what Lupin was trying to get at. “What do you want me to do about it?”
Lupin stared at him for a long moment before he spoke. “You're different.”
He was. Wars did that to people. “What's your purpose here, Lupin?”
The older man put his head in his hands, his fingers pulling a bit at his hair. “I just thought that we could...”
Regulus stepped closer without realizing. “Could what?”
Lupin looked at him through his fingers. “Could just pretend for a bit.”
“Pretend what?”
“That there isn't a war going on. That we're not on opposite sides and one day might end up fighting against one another. I miss what we had a couple years ago. The innocence of all of it.”
Regulus raised an eyebrow. “So you're just here for a snog and a grope or two?”
Lupin dropped his hands and gave him an annoyed look. “You don't understand what it's like out there, Regulus. You're still nice and secure and safe behind the walls of Hogwarts.”
Regulus snorted in amusement. “Think it's all fun and games for me, do you?”
“I didn't come here for a fight.”
“No, you came here thinking that we could just forget the world in a fit of romance. There is no romance, Lupin. Only war. You can't just ignore that. People are fighting and dying. It won't just stop when you put your hands down my pants.”
Lupin was surged to his feet again, eyes angry. “I bloody well know that! I've seen the war. I've been a part of it. It haunts me, and I only wished to find a moment of peace before I had to go back out there.”
Regulus was silent for a moment, and seeing no real threat, put his wand back into his pocket and crossed his arms. “So why me? Why not go find some random bloke to shag? Why the enemy?”
“Because I trust you,” Lupin said with a pitying look.
“You shouldn't,” Regulus replied simply.
“I do, though.” Lupin took a step closer, causing Regulus to take a step back despite himself. “You're impossible to read, Regulus. I never know what's going on in that head of yours, and even so, I still trust you. If I didn't, I wouldn't have told you about this place.”
“Which was really stupid of you to do, you know.” Regulus took another step back as Lupin took another one forward.
“Maybe, but I doubt it.”
Regulus didn't know how to reply. Lupin continued to approach, a look in his eyes that Regulus couldn't quite place. His back hit a wall, leaving him nowhere else to go. He reached for his wand, but then Lupin was on him, grabbing his wrist and stopping his movements.
“Something tells me you want to forget too, Regulus,” Lupin said softly, his breath hot on Regulus' face. “So why don't you just give in for a moment?”
“I can't...” Regulus murmured. Lupin was too close. He was having a hard time thinking properly. Why couldn't he exactly?
“You can,” Lupin whispered back before placing his lips on Regulus'. Lupin's lips were demanding, hungry and savage as his tongue easily pushed past Regulus' lips and began to explore his mouth.
Regulus found himself kissing back.
There was no way that things would end well between them, but as Lupin kissed him, it became a fleeting thought. Perhaps Regulus would allow himself to forget about the war and the fact that they were enemies just for a little while.

I love the heaviness of the war weighing down on them, but with throwbacks to a safer time when they were both in Hogwarts. It's like they shouldn't work and they won't work but they want to try for as long as they can. It's so angsty and addictive, and I love it. You wrote it so well, and I really enjoyed reading it from Regulus's viewpoint. I thought it was very like Regulus to be trustworthy while believing that Remus shouldn't be regardless - it shows his character, and how he becomes a self-sacrificing traitor not long after this scene.
Thank you so much, I really enjoyed this ♥

To be honest, I've never really considered this ship, until now. Thanks for turning me on to Lestrange-Loup. I'm interested, and will be looking out for fics featuring these two in the future elsewhere! :)

Regulus is a wonderful character, and my heart was certainly hurting for him as well. I do hope they enjoy what's between them while they can... before it's too late. <3
