“You’re late,” Regulus said with a small smile, as Remus shut the door to the empty classroom behind him.
“I had to make sure they weren’t following me; you know what they’re like,” Remus answered with a smile of his own.
They, of course, being the other Marauders – Sirius, James, and Peter. As he did every week, Remus had asked to borrow the Map so they wouldn’t be able to see who he was meeting up with. His friends had teased him about his ‘secret girlfriend’, but Remus hated to think of their reactions if they ever discovered he was dating Sirius’s younger brother.
Regulus was a lot like Sirius, perhaps in more ways than they knew, but they were very different from one another as well. Regulus shared the dark hair and sharp cheekbones that Sirius had, but while Sirius had steel grey eyes, Regulus’s were a bright blue.
And unknown to Sirius, Regulus shared the same distaste for their parent’s beliefs, but Regulus dealt with his opposition in a very different way. Regulus put up a front of the perfect Pureblood son, Slytherin and respectful, while really he was falling for a Half-blood werewolf.
Yes, Regulus knew Remus was a werewolf, and surprisingly he didn’t care. Regulus had figured it out himself, and Remus hadn’t bothered to deny it.
He knew, by that point, that Regulus was incredibly clever. They had gotten to know one another when Regulus approached Remus for tutoring in Defence against the Arts. Regulus had claimed he needed to be seen as naturally smart, and trusted Remus to keep the tutoring a secret, but Remus soon discovered that it was all a ruse. Regulus knew everything that Remus taught him, and eventually Regulus admitted he had pretended to need tutoring so he could get to know Remus.
Though flattered, Remus had been reluctant, which was when Regulus assured him that he knew about Remus’s lycanthropy and didn’t care. Regulus wasn’t prejudiced, claiming his best friend was the House-elf Kreacher, and because they both had a part of themselves to hide, Remus and Regulus easily fell into a relationship.
They had been together a year now, and still, nobody knew but them. Remus’s friends were a bit hurt that Remus refused to reveal the identity of his partner to them, but Regulus agreed with Remus that Sirius was better off not knowing.
“You graduate in two weeks,” Regulus commented, patting the seat of the love chair beside him, transfigured from a desk. Remus sank onto the soft grey cushion and wrapped his arm around Regulus’s shoulders.
“Yes, I don’t know whether I’m looking forward to it or not,” Remus mused, sighing in content when Regulus pressed his body against his, placing his head on Remus’s shoulder. Their hands linked, fitting together perfectly.
“It won’t be easy for you,” Regulus murmured, squeezing Remus’s hand gently. “It will only be a year though, and then we’ll be back together and I can help you.”
“Will you even want me after a year? You might find someone you can be with, but without having to hide - a human, Pure-blood girl, who can give you an heir,” Remus said, trying to sound reassuring even though he felt sick to his stomach at the thought of Regulus moving on with someone else, but he reminded himself that it was selfish to hold Regulus back.
“I want you,” Regulus answered firmly, twisting so he could kiss Remus on the lips. “It will be okay for us in the end, I promise. I have enough money to last more than the rest of my life, so neither of us has to worry about a job, and werewolves might actually get rights soon.”
“He won’t give us rights; all he’s giving away is prey for those who want it,” Remus said, his tone a bit harsher than intended. He knew that Regulus had an unhealthy interest in Voldemort, and although Remus believed Regulus when he said that he was interested in Voldemort’s intelligence rather than his ideals, Remus knew that Regulus’s desire to please his parents could result in him receiving the Dark Mark and becoming a Death Eater.
“I just want us to have a good life,” Regulus muttered, so quietly that Remus only heard him because of how close they were. “We’re both constrained, and I don’t want that to hold us down forever.”
“Regulus, you don’t have to do anything to try and help me. I’m happy as long as I’m with you,” Remus smiled, bringing his other arm around Regulus to hug him tightly.
Regulus scratched his forearm subconsciously, and then melted into the embrace with a happy sigh.
“Let’s enjoy these last two weeks,” Regulus smiled, looking up at Remus with determined eyes. “And then I’ll wait for you. We’ll be okay.”
