Amos lay limply on his back, his arms dangling off the sides of the bed. He stared up at the ceiling, framed in the edges of his bedcurtains, black and yellow as all Hufflepuff's were. The ceiling itself was rather unremarkable, with not even the faintest of cracks to divert oneself with. All Amos had were his memories.

Lucius had faded to a dim background shadow, for though he still followed Amos around the castle every moment, Amos could no longer lose himself in the bright, devious magic of Malfoy's eyes. He could feel them, just over his shoulder, but he wouldn't allow himself to look. Not anymore.

Every time he thought about it, he remembered that night in the forest and felt sick. Lucius had harmed an innocent person, just for the blood in his veins. To obey a master who had steadily been infiltrating the Wizarding world over the past few years, a master who struck fear into all who were decent. A master who struck awe, apparently, in Lucius Malfoy.

So although Amos found his heart pulling still towards those eyes, he would let his brain rule, and turn away. Lucius had tried to convince him, with his silky serpent's tongue, but Amos was far beyond words now. Malfoy could hiss at him all he wanted, in the spaces between classes and meals, sliding up against him in the corridors, but Amos would never answer, could never answer again.

He would ignore Lucius for the rest of his days, choosing instead the goodness and dignity of a proper Hufflepuff. The very goodness he should have chosen from the very beginning, the goodness which would have prevented him from falling under Malfoy's spell at all. However, if he had done that, he wouldn't have the memories.

They kept him awake at night, flashes of trysts in empty classrooms, Lucius with his hands upon Amos, his long blonde hair in Amos's face while their lips met with increasing ferocity. Amos knew it wasn't healthy, to dwell on such things when he was trying to be rid of Malfoy entirely, but he had almost an entire school year's worth of them, his treasure trove of memories. They haunted him.

He could avoid Malfoy all day, and never speak to him again. But he could never stop the memories. Truthfully, he would never want to, for they were the only true pleasure he had ever had in this castle. He loathed himself for admitting it, but there it was. He had lost his Malfoy, his only pleasure. The memory was the only thing keeping him sane.

This really breaks my heart. Amos feels so numb without Lucius that he can't even try in vain to pull him onto the light side. I really like that Lucius tries to talk to Amos and for the sake of this pairing I would love Amos not to be so stubborn once, but it's better like this. All this tragic makes them an even better pairing.

At least Amos has the memories, and Lucius too. Sadly they won't keep them warm at night. *runs away to cry*
