He's not a nice person.

She discovers this first year when Malfoy hears her last name boom from the Sorting Hat, tries for a sneering moment to place her, and then catches sight of her fading robes and limp black hair. He turns to exchange a what-is-the-world-coming-to look with a pug-faced girl she'll learn to disdain.

Dismissed.

He misses the tremble of triumph fluttering her fingers, quickly tucked away, because she knows her own worth.

She gets the four-poster bed farthest from Pansy, the apex of the clique that forms amongst the first years. When their self-proclaimed Queen Bee stakes a claim on the wealthiest, purest boy in their year, Tracey thinks, thank god.

In this social jungle, she is a bottom-feeder, lower even than Millicent because at least she's rich. She can't offer advantageous connections, privileges, gifts or talents; she is only a half-blood, and her lot in life is to ingratiate. Tracey grovels like the best of them (her sorting in Slytherin is no accident). Her reward: Pansy's castoffs and Daphne's discarded trinkets.

There are no girl friends to be made, so her first friend is a boy.

They meet in the library one night; he sits burrowed in a worn armchair, a spellbook three years too advanced propped open on his knees.

"If you're that far ahead," she asks, "why aren't you beating Malfoy in marks?"

"Why are you following Parkinson around like a house-elf?" he counters.

"Self-preservation," she says.

"Slytherin," he corrects.

"I'm Tracey Davis."

Sardonic humor glints in his brown eyes at her presumption that he has any interest in knowing her. "Theodore Nott."

It is not a beautiful friendship or the beginning of love everlasting, or any such rubbish. Their temperaments are alike, practical and unfussy, and for a long time they are an undramatic pair, wallflowers really, who others point to, when they bother to notice them at all, as the exception that proves the rule. Their House is the bastion of the histrionic and chronically prejudiced, and with Malfoy and Parkinson as the figureheads, Tracey finds that utterly unsurprising.

Then Theo tells her he's been invited to Malfoy Manor and the ensuing row uncovers long-hidden streaks of temper, hers cold and his hot, that threaten to render them both friendless. His father is a Death Eater, but she has always thought Theo (he is never Theodore to her) would be a better man. By necessity, and for survival in an ocean of sharks, her principles are fluid; morality is nothing if not flexible, contextual even. But she feels as though he's abandoning her, crossing a line she didn't know existed until he vaults over it.

That line is Draco Malfoy, and no amount of rationalizing will allow her to accept his betrayal.

You see, she is a fraud. There is not one drop of the ancient and sainted and pure in her common veins; she is as muddy as they come. And now there is no one at all in Slytherin House she can tell.

I've been waiting for those ficlets and I'm glad you've started posting.

The beginning is really promosing. I love your Tracey, she's my kind of character. Her relationship with Theo was very interesting and it's sad that it ended so quickly.

The last lines where amazing. Tracey is a fraud.

You've got my attention - I can't wait to read more!
