I've often thought that Dumbldore's callous disregard for Slytherin students lost him many, many tp Voldemort. I think the incident with Remus sealed Severus' fate...but the year that he gave all the points to Harry, Hermione and Ron and 'stole' Slyterhin's House Cup for Gryffindor...I think he turned a whole new generation against him.
