Title: First Date
Pairing: Zacharias Smith/Ginny Weasley
Rating: PG
Word Count: 911
Summary: After the War, Zach and Ginny attempt a first date.
Author's Notes: Thank you beta (SM). I hope the recipient enjoys this. I tried to give them an unusual first date as well as working in other prompts (coping with loss, familial responsibilities, romance, comedy, first date) offered. Happy Holidays.
Zacharias Smith couldn't bear another funeral or memorial service. This was the fifth one in four days, but he couldn't bow out even if he wanted to. He'd barely seen her since the defeat of Voldemort and the aftermath of their victory. He watched her, standing with her parents, head bowed, her face stained with a week's worth of tears. He didn't know if she knew that he had returned to Hogwarts for the final battle. He didn't know if she saw him observing her in her grief. He had remained distant that first day. After all, no one knew about them; even their closest friends in the DA knew nothing.
He came up from behind and was momentarily distracted when George Weasley caught his eye. He had never seen George without a smile, had never really seen anyone so sad, and it took him aback. He recovered quickly, looking away from George’s guilt-filled gaze, slipping his hand into Ginny's. She started at his touch and attempted to tug her hand away, but he held tight and gave a miniscule tug of his own.
She turned and he saw the recognition in her eyes. He couldn't reach her when she went into hiding after the Easter holidays, and he wasn't sure what her reaction would be now. She surprised him, and her entire family when she threw her arms around his neck, burying her face in his chest. His shirt dampened from her tears and he put his arms around her, drawing her closer, glad he made the decision to approach her at all. Now, he could make amends and help her begin to heal from her brother's death.

Zach sat in the corner of the Leaky Cauldron, watching the door. He was amazed that he was so nervous. They had met before in the past two months, but this was going to be their first actual date. You couldn't really call their clandestine after-DA-meeting meetings at Hogwarts dates. They were more like snogging sessions. He smiled remembering the first time he kissed her. It was after the only Quidditch match of seventh year and he had expected her to taste of strawberries for some odd reason. He may have overheard Michael Corner talking to Terry Boot about her, but wherever he got the notion, he was quite surprised when she thrust her tongue into his mouth, and even more surprised to have it taste of hot sauce. His lips curved up at the memory, and his smile broadened still when he saw the flash of red hair entering the Cauldron's dark room. He brushed the hair from his eyes and was about to rise when he was startled to be greeted by Bill Weasley followed closely by Charlie and Percy.
"I was expecting Ginny. We're having a –"
"We know," Charlie said. "You were expecting our baby sister for a date."
Bill began to speak, brushing his long hair over his shoulder. "George is keeping her busy for us. We thought we'd have a chat first."
Zacharias couldn't believe what her brothers were doing. When Ginny found out, she would go mental. He smiled at the thought. He watched Percy as he unrolled a piece of parchment and touched the tip of the quill with his tongue. "Why are you here Percy?"
"Oh, I'm to take the minutes. That way there's a record."
"A record? Record of what?"
"Of your solemn vow not to do anything untoward to our sister," Bill stated matter-of-factly.
"With," Percy added, his quill pausing in mid stroke.
"With?" Charlie asked.
Bill agreed. "Yes, with our sister. Semantics are very important to our Percy. That should cover all the bases."
"And what if she's proposing the untowardness?" He almost laughed as he said it, but his small attempt at humor had fallen on deaf ears, not to mention an older brother flexing his arms menacingly.
"That's our baby sister you're talking about," Charlie glowered.
"Our innocent baby sister," Percy added, continuing to jot down every word spoken.
Zacharias almost snorted at the thought of Ginny Weasley as an innocent. Wasn't she the one who pursued him? Wasn't she the one who met him in the broomshed with no knickers? She was the one who set off the Whiz Bangs in the Hufflepuff bathroom, and was waiting with Colin Creevey's camera when he ran out naked. She was –. He stopped reminiscing suddenly when he saw the ominous looks on her brothers’ faces, and was really quite glad he controlled his laughter.
"What do you want from me?"
"Be respectful."
"Of course."
"No touching."
"I can't promise that."
"Can't promise what?"
Ginny's voice was a welcome relief. He saw his brothers glare at George, who simply shrugged with a 'how do you expect me to control her' look?
"That I won't touch you." He felt bolder with her nearby. He rose to greet her and instead of kissing her on the cheek as he had planned, he drew her into an embrace, kissing her soundly on the mouth, letting his hand run down her back, stopping right where it would annoy her brothers. When they separated, he was pleased that Ginny was smiling and she leaned in for another kiss. He couldn't help but notice that Percy was still taking notes even after Bill and Charlie had disapparated. He and George finally moved off and Zacharias and Ginny were left to their date. Their first date.
