peskywhistpaw's request. I hope you don't mind that I only put Katie in Hogwarts, but I just couldn't deal with 14-year-old Katie having a romance so I wanted the ages a bit less creepy/pedo-like. :D
"Katie! Katie! Did you hear? Oliver's coming back!" Alicia bounded into the common room and bounced up and down next to her on the couch.
"What for? He's already got his NEWTs!" Katie said, closing her Potions textbook.
"He's coming to watch the match, silly," Alicia said with a dreamy expression on her face.
Katie laughed and swatted her with a pillow. "Don't let Ang catch you with that face. She'll have him barred from the game so he won't distract you."
Alicia pouted.
"What's the big deal? It's only Oliver," Katie added, putting her Potions book back in her bag. She clearly wouldn't get any more revision done.
"Katie, he's not only Oliver," Alicia said with a slightly shocked expression on her face. "He's a professional Quidditch player now. He's famous."
"So? Harry's famous. I don't see you swooning when he asks you to pass the kippers at breakfast," Katie said with a shrug.
Alicia wrinkled her nose. "Harry's fifteen and besides, he's all scrawny. Oliver is nineteen. He's a man. Plus he's really filled out since he joined up. I saw a picture of him in Quidditch Quarterly and he looks gorgeous," she said.
Katie rolled her eyes. "Whatever. It'll be nice to see him, anyway." She wondered if he could give her some pointers. As much as she liked Angelina, she wasn't nearly as helpful as Oliver had been for improving her game play.
*****************
Oliver showed up in their change room after the game, cheeks red from the cold, wrapped up in a big Gryffindor scarf. Katie had to admit that he did look pretty gorgeous, but she'd never tell Alicia that.
"Great game," he said and everyone chorused their thanks.
"Hi Oliver," Alicia said in a husky voice.
"Hey Alicia! Are you alright? It sounds like you're coming down with a cold," Oliver asked, a little worried. Katie met Ginny's eyes and they quickly looked away, sniggering. Alicia blushed and stammered and Angelina interrupted her with a barrage of questions about tactics. Katie hung back, wanting to talk to him, but Angelina and Alicia kept at him until Professor McGonagall came down and said they had to get back up to the tower. As she turned to leave, Oliver caught her arm.
"Hey Kat, sorry. Did you want to say something?"
She shook her head and smiled. "It's not important, don't worry about it. It was nice to see you, Oliver. Thanks for coming."
Oliver sighed. "Of course it's important. Listen, why don't I meet you for lunch on your next Hogsmeade weekend? It's in two weeks, right? We don't have a game that day. You can talk my ear off without those two jumping all over us."
Katie grinned up at him. "Sounds perfect. Thanks, Ollie!" And with a little wave she skipped out of the dressing room, humming happily.
*****************
The snow was thick on the ground as Katie made her way to the small restaurant Oliver had told her to meet him at. It wasn't on the High Street and Katie got turned around a few times before she found it. When she got inside, Oliver was already waiting at one of the two tables. She took off her cloak and he handed her a steaming mug of tea.
"Thanks. Weather's something terrible. I can't wait until I can Apparate," Katie said, cupping her hands around the tea and letting the steam warm her face. "I bet you're sad you're not playing today," she added.
Oliver quirked a smile. "You know me. Any weather." Katie groaned, thinking of their six a.m. Quidditch practices and he laughed. She smacked his arm in retaliation.
They had a pleasant lunch of fish and chips and Oliver told Katie all about life on the Reserves and his recent promotion up to the first team. He gave her some good pointers about her play and she took out a small notepad and self-inking quill to write them down.
"I know Angelina and Alicia are your mates, but you shouldn't let them walk all over you," Oliver said, taking a sip of tea.
"What? That's silly!" Katie said.
Oliver shook his head. "I don't think you're doing it consciously, but you only score if there's no other option. You give the Quaffle to them even if you've got a better scoring opportunity. When I was in the locker room, you just stood back and let them jump all over me." He scowled. "I could have used some saving there. When did Alicia get all aggressive and tarty?"
"She dated a Slytherin last year," Katie said.
"Ah," Oliver said understandingly.
"But Oliver, what are you saying? You think I should be pushy and bitchy and self-centered?"
"Not at all, Kat," Oliver corrected her. "You just need to be more assertive. You'll never be able to make it in the pros if you're always deferring to your other Chasers, Kat. And I know that's what you want." He reached across the table and squeezed her hand. "You just have to stop being so damn nice and considerate, alright? Take up more space in the air, make the other team afraid of you. You've got a firecracker inside you, Katie Bell. You just need to let it go off more often."
Katie blushed bright red and hid behind her tea mug, mumbling her thanks.
*****************
"You hussy!" Alicia shrieked, throwing her gloves at Katie. "You knew I wanted him and you pretended not to care! And then I have to hear from that horrible Mildred Snodgrass that she saw you two coming out of McGregor's looking all cozy and laughing." Katie covered her face as Alicia's scarf came flying her way.
"We were just talking Quidditch!" Katie protested, ducking Al's purse. "Honestly! He was giving me tips!"
"Really?" Alicia asked, her hand inches from her Potions textbook. Katie nodded, eying the book warily. "Oh, well, in that case," Alicia beamed and gave Katie a hug before stooping to pick up her things.
Fred's head peeked over the edge of a sofa. "Bloody hell, Kat. She's going to kill you when she finds out you're meeting him over Christmas."
"Well, it's a good thing she doesn't know then, isn't it?" Katie snapped. "So you'd best not tell her or I'll come back from the dead and haunt you when you're trying to shag Angelina."
Fred looked at her, a horrified expression on his face. "You wouldn't!" He thought about it and then grinned slyly. "Actually, that might be kinda kinky." He quickly ducked back behind the sofa as Katie's shoe flew towards his head.
*****************
"That was amazing!" Katie gushed as they left the stadium. Oliver chuckled. "No, seriously, Oliver! Viktor Krum is incredible! I saw him last year at the Triwizard Tournament but he never flew or anything. The way he just dove after that Snitch. Total commitment! He didn't care if he crashed as long as he got the Snitch! But he wouldn't crash, he's too good to crash," Katie babbled.
Oliver threw his arm around her shoulder and she beamed up at him. A sudden flash caused them to both look around as a photographer snapped their picture. Katie pulled away from Oliver, biting her lip. "Alicia's going to murder me," she whispered.
"Kat, listen to me," Oliver said. "I don't belong to Alicia. She hasn't got any claim on me, despite what she might think. If I have to send her an owl telling her that, I will. I don't want you to stop spending time with me because of her. I really like hanging out with you."
"Me too," Katie said. She slipped her gloved hand into his and smiled up at him.
Alicia and the photographer were soon forgotten as they went for a post-game hot chocolate, discussing Krum's tactics and the weaker Chasers on his team. Finally Oliver looked at his watch and sighed. "It's almost midnight. I should get you home." Katie frowned. "I know, but your father is probably waiting up for you and I have no desire to get on the wrong end of his wand."
Katie nodded and pulled on her cloak and gloves reluctantly. Oliver side-along Apparated them to a park near Katie's house and they walked slowly down the road, watching the snowflakes fall. "I wish we had a Time-Turner," Katie said. "I really had fun today."
"Ditto," Oliver agreed with a sigh. "And we've got that game with the Harpies next week, so –" he broke off and shrugged. "I don't know if I'll be able to make your next Hogsmeade weekend."
"It's okay. I know you're busy," Katie said with a slightly sad smile. "Maybe I can see you in the summer?"
"Yeah. Definitely. And I'll owl you," Oliver added.
They stopped on the sidewalk in front of Katie's house.
"Well," said Katie.
"Right," said Oliver. They looked at each other and then looked away.
"Happy Christmas, Oliver," Katie said after a moment. He reached out a hand and brushed a snowflake off her cheek. Katie felt her breath catch in her throat and Oliver leaned down and kissed her gently.
"Happy Christmas, Katie," he said. He straightened up, smiled at her and then Apparated away. Katie stood outside in the snow for a while, staring at the spot where he'd Disapparated before her father came out to check if she'd been cursed.
